2018's unemployment not at alarming level: DOE

Tanakorn Sangiam

BANGKOK, 26 October 2018 (NNT) - The unemployment situation in 2018 is not at an alarming level while the biggest group of unemployed persons are aged between 20-24 years, said acting Department of Employment Petcharat Sinauy Director-General said the overall unemployment situation from May is showing a sign of decline from 2016 and 2017, especially in September 2018, where the number of the unemployed is only about 373,000, showing that the situation is not at an alarming rate.

Earlier this year, the unemployment rate has risen to 1.2-1.3 percent, before dropping to one percent. Data shows the highest group of unemployed persons belonged to the manufacturing sector, followed by the service and agricultural sector. The most common causes of unemployment are resignation, closure of business, and expiration of contract.

The biggest demographic group of unemployed persons is those between 20-24 years old, most of which have recently graduated with commerce and accountancy degree, followed by a degree in education and sociology. Most of these people are actively looking for job, but have not found a suitable ones.

The Ministry of Labor has ordered the Department of Employment to set up Job Ready Centers since July to help recent graduates with bachelor degree find their job, as well as providing consultation, skills development, career guidance, and job matching services.

Eleven Job Ready Centers have been open across the country, including in those in Chiang Mai, Pitsanulok, Ayutthaya, Prachin Buri, Nakhon Ratchasima, Khon Kaen, Chonburi, Rayong, Surat Thani, Songkhla, and Bangkok.

The department also provides services on various online platforms as well as Call Center 1506.

At the regional Labour office...and yes believe it or not  there are some unemployment benefits

available to people who have worked and paid into the "scheme" in the past.

Undertakers are gainfully employed year round! Panelbeaters and spray painters are never idle with all the broken cars. Hospitals can't find enough staff to keep up with the carnage.

Yes, but it says nothing about millions of motorbike jockeys who can't find a decent job.

At the next Somchais hammock, he'll give you a 2s job to open a new laukhao and you're gainfully employed for the rest of the month.

It doesn't include the 4% of the workforce who are in the process of moving from one job to another hence the real number is that 2% plus 4% - Thailand use sampling to arrive at these percentages, the same method used by lots of different countries, reliably.

Each Amphur has an unemployment office where the unemployed can sign on for benefits, the catch is that they have to accept any work they are given or the benefits stop.
