Thailand cave rescuers were sure most of the kids would die

They didn’t tell the press this, or the desperate, waiting parents — but the international team of divers who rescued 12 boys and their soccer coach from a submerged cave in Thailand last summer had assumed, going in, that most of the kids would die.

 

According to a gripping new book — “The Boys In The Cave” by Matt Gutman of ABC News — two of the boys nearly did perish during the risky rescue.

 

One, a tall 16-year-old nicknamed “Night,” was suffering severe pneumonia. He repeatedly stopped breathing under the heavy sedation needed to keep the boys’ wetsuit-swathed bodies calm and pliant as they were pulled a mile through a treacherous, underground hellscape.

Their options were extremely limited and it stands testament to the level of their professionalism that they got them all out alive. Better to have taken the risk and succeed, than let them die slowly in the dark.

The success or failure of the rescue clearly hung on a knifes edge and I am damn glad I didn't have to make the call on what to do. With a suspicion of such a high potential mortality rate, it shows how desperate the situation must have been. I am still in awe of what they did.

At the time , I was wondering to myself .

Say , if the first six boys attempting to escape the cave had perished during the rescue mission , would they have continued the rescue mission or decided to leave the other boys in the cave for a few months until the water levels subsided

It would be interesting to know where Matt Gutman got all the information from to write the book.

 

AFAIR the two divers with each boy had no communication with each other underwater and would only be able to speak when they surfaced in the caves.

Find this hard to believe. Would they really gone ahead with an estimated 80% fatality rate.

20% success must be better than a possible 80% failure when lives, especially young ones , are at stake.  As we know the 80% became 0% for the boys/coach.

In all my years I have never witnessed such a gripping ordeal that had the whole world tuning in.

The courage and sheer persistence of all involved in the cave rescue was almost beyond belief and whatever the rescuers thoughts may have been the result was astonishing and only tarnished by the untimely death of one of the heroes.

They could have lived there for 6 months if absolutely necessary in lit tents similar to what they use

for long winter expeditions in Antartica

Just as a matter of Interest the two guys from West and South Aust, Craig Challen and Ricard Harris have both be awarded by their respetive States "Person of the Year" and there's support for both to recieve  Australian of the Year Award.

No they couldn't.  Some of the problems were air quality was very low and hard to maintain adequate oxygen, sanitation and hygiene were very poor and would lead to infection. They were in a confined space sitting on wet rocks. Where could they put up tents ?  In Antarctica you have a big choice where you want to have a dump and there is plenty of fresh air and fresh water, and daylight,

To be honest, I'm a little tired of hearing about this lot as they are not some sort of heroes or something...they were a bunch of careless kids under to the guidance of an even more careless adult. There is your full quote above. OK I have read and digested it in disgust.

 

1. Why are you "a little tired of hearing about this lot"?  "This lot".  What a derogatory term to use. If it were your kids would you not be happy about their rescue etc and tell/explain to the world.

The divers are the real heroes because they achieved what really looked impossible. A miracle is not too strong a word to use for what occurred.

But the kids and the coach are heroes too because they never panicked over all those days and nights they were stuck in the cave. Their optimism and calm in the face of dire adversity was truly inspiring.

If they had been morons as Sir Dude suggests, they would have used a can of aerosol to spray, 'Man U woz ere' in the cave, and then burst into tears, but they didn't, they remained steadfast, united and kept their spirits up.

God bless  all involved in this amazing story.
