It would be hugely helpful if you could either post a link to that article (if mods allow this), or at least tell us the 3 countries....

Never ask. Google -> "daily mail australia 3 countries to retire" -> Penang, The Algarve, Chiang Mai.

Meanwhile, the UK Daily Fail claims Australians have identified Toulon, Penang and Barcelona as the 3 best cities to retire to.

And Daily Fail claims the 5 best cities for Americans as Mafra, Portugal; Cuenca, Ecuador; Central Valley, Costa Rica;  Pedasí, Panama; and Phnom Penh, Cambodia

Cuenca continues to interest me. What's different about it is --

Medium sized biggish city

Mild spring like climate (but not tropical so not a place to hang out in cargo shorts and sandals)

Unusual amount of high brow culture for it's size (festivals, orchestras, etc.)

Recently finishing a world class tram mass transport system

Low priced taxis (Most foreigners don't own cars and don't need to/want to)

Retirement visas low level qualification (much less than Thailand)

Path to permanent residence

Constitutional civil rights for foreigners

Good health care infrastructure
Very organized, very active support system for Anglo residents

Negatives not mentioned. Ha ha.

Being in the mountains, I can see the Chiang Mai appeal of the place as well.

Stop press, it's possible to retire on 40k in Thailand, Malaysia and Spain.....remember, you heard it here first.:sleepy:

I assume he's talking about AUD 40,000 = 920,000 baht.

Those cities are a downgrade from better places to retire IN Australia.
