Dog Attack and a Thai Frenzy!

So Im wandering down a semi quiet main road (as opposed to a back Soi or busy main road) in I guess the Pasi Charoen neighborhood heading back to my digs. Pretty hot, and Im fat and sweating, carrying a pack on my back and my DSLR on a Monopod. Im walking on the side of the road thats pretty quiet and as I pass a bus with some older Thai ladies standing by it, I give them my usual wai and smile, a dog comes out of nowhere from behind and charges me. The only way I know this is because I hear some aggressive barking and these ladies these ladies start screaming in Thai and as I turn, the dog just bumps my leg and runs off. Ddidnt even have time to wack it with my stick. The ladies saw the dog hit me and now are totally gibbering and yelling, I hear the word Falang and Dog, I look down, no skin break, its OK, I say, OK, one of the ladies starts yelling at a dude where the dog disapeared to, I just wai and say OK, OK khop Khun kap, start walking and I dont get 10 meters when these guys across the street start yelling "falang falang" and wave me to come over. So I cross the street and these four middle age guys who are just chilling there start inspecting my leg, a lady comes out of the shophouse next door and joins them. One guy speaks pidgen English and keeps saying bite, bite, I say No, is OK, if bite I go to hospital. At which point another smiling dude says Hospital *insert thai here*, pulls up his shirt to show me a pistol, makes shooting motions at where the dog dissapeared to. No dudes its all cool, no bite, is OK, so after inspection, the dude pulls his shirt down. Then the usual conversation, where you from, where you go, you have Thai lady, Manchester United, Liverpool, Thai food aroi, show them pics of me eating Thai food and drinking Lao Khao with my MC taxi guys, lots of smiles and thumbs up, have a cigarette, I walk to the shophouse next door, buy 5 cokes for 50 baht, we all share, laugh, etc.

Now Im wondering if they were just being nice and helpful (if bitten giving me a dog corpse for rabies evaluation) or if I walked into some kind of neighborhood problem with a dog and would have made a good excuse. to take the critter out. I any event the guys were really cool, I sat down with them and pidgen shot the bull, they probably dont see too many fat old Americans there so they had an interesting afternoon.

Good to read all turned out well for you.   I'm a creature lover (dogs, cats, insects and etc) but I don't like situation where I'm forced to encounter a territorial dog or any other animal.

With a little thought,  I'd think  any dog owner would appreciate how  horrible it is to be attacked by a  one or even more dogs.

Typical friendly Thais in their own natural environment.

Seems you enjoyed your afternoon as much as they did.

All's well that ends well  ????

Yeah, I tend to agree, I have a pretty good time with regular Thai folks. I find that the Thai folks are very different outside the Tourist areas. It seems that some of these older (middle aged) guys like nothing more than a break in the routine and hanging with a foreigner who acts like...just a regular Thai guy ????

One Ice Breaker I have found is my ability to eat regular Thai people style spicy food with all sorts of wierd stuff in it. I find that there is a big difference between Thai food served in tourist areas and Thai food served out here. Its cheaper, spicier and has more strange stuff in it. The Cook ladies love that I just dig in.

There are a fair number of street dogs where i live and walk and i've noticed over the years that the troublesome ones disappear. There was food stall  lady who used to give me a stick everytime to walk down the local footpath and after a while I didnt need it any more.   I remember a few years ago seeing a few dogs with muzzles on and a lot of dogs "sleeping" next to BangNa trad. My assumption is that there is a cull  every year or so and they warn the local owners to keep their dogs safe and the unpleasant ones get removed. .   I assume also that the local dogs have evolved to get used to my look or smell. They used to chase me a lot now they dont at all.

I should have been more alert, but I didnt see it coming. I think it was a problem dog.

Yup, i got bitten just below my backside out riding my bicycle one day.

I never saw it coming either, now i carry one of those tactical batons , have snapped it out a couple of times but never made contact !

Soi dogs are bad enough but those ninja ones are the worst !!
