webfact
Teacher probed after Buri Ram boy allegedly beaten By Surachai Piraksa The Nation A Buri Ram school has set up a committee to investigate a parent’s allegation that one of its teachers made a Prathom 6 pupil do 50 jumping jacks in the hot sun and struck him 10 times with a wooden stick wrapped in duct tape. The 12-year-old schoolboy’s mother revealed the Friday afternoon (November 9) incident and said her son had merely failed to recite a multiplication table. Piya Phutthapoh, director of Anuban Phutthaisong School in Phutthaisong district, said on Sunday a fact-finding committee had been established and would report its findings to the Buri Ram Primary Educational Area 4 Office within seven days. Piya said the unnamed teacher, who had made no public comment on the incident as of press time Sunday, admitted to punishing the boy, but the committee would decide whether the punishment was too severe. “If it was, the teacher would face a disciplinary hearing,” Piya said, vowing to ensure fairness for both sides in the affair. He admitted to being concerned about the boy’s mental state and had assigned other teachers to help his parents take care of him. The boy’s grandmother, enraged by the sight of the boy’s injury, urged his teacher to take responsibility and said she might transfer him to another school if the teacher goes unpunished. Popular Post kingstonkid
While I agree the injuries should be dealt with and the teacher fired from teaching, I would like to know what REALLY caused the teacher to punish him. Teachers in Thailand rarely care if you can recite a timetable as a matter of fact I think most of them would have trouble. I am willing to be there is more to it than the boy has admitted 5 3 1

Let's just hope that the teacher is sacked and gets a prison term, but this being Thailand I doubt that will happen. 9

In fact it's specifically illegal for teachers to hit children in Thailand, so: - Why has the teacher broken the law. This happens frequently and reported in the media, so -Why hasn't the education ministry ensured that all teachers know it's against the law and taken disciplinary action in so many previous cases. - Why are the police not involved in this case (and many others)?

That this heinous animal couldn't control his own actions means he needs to go, and needs a punishment that will remind him for the rest of his life that behavior like this can never be tolerated. 12

NextStationBangkok
Ill-treatment of kids is quite common among Asian teachers, recently teachers in trouble in the class with unruly kids addicted to electronic devices. Most of them have attention disorder in the early age, now a days. The way it looks seems 100 times, but seems it is not 10 times lashed.

To prevent it to happening again let the teacher taste his own medisin in the middle of the school yard in front of the children and his colleges and he will never do it again neither will his colleges - a simple, fast and fair solution which will benefit all.... Popular Post cracker1
Not another "Committee" ! The Mother should go to the Police and file an assault charge against the teacher. I'm sure there were may witnesses to this assault. 4

The serious question is why there was there corporal punishment at all for failing to recite multiplication tables correctly? Surely it doesn't take 7 days for a committee to mull that question. The school director is pathetic for not taking that responsibility, that's their job. it shouldn't take a person of average intelligence more than 10 minutes to come up with an answer. 3
StevieAus
When I read these articles and reports about committees being established to investigate the incident I cannot understand the reluctance of parents to report the matter to the police. I understand that corporal punishment in Thai schools is not allowed, therefore when it occurs the teacher has assaulted the child which is illegal I accept that the police are not the most proactive to press charges but there are channels through which it can be pursued and organisationations who will assist. It says little for the mentality of the parents. 2

Popular Post darksidedog
Further proof that the country is insane. Corporal punishment in school is illegal, yet we hear of it happening continuously. Teachers are given a degree of respect that they mostly do not justify in the slightest and it is high time that EVERY single one of them hitting a child faces jail. When every time it happens, the cops arrive, arrest and jail the perpetrator, the frequency of such incidents will drop rapidly. 7

Pitiful. - Surely it's on camera or there are numerous witnesses to the act (or both) since it took place at school. There is no excuse for beating a child like this. Teaching license permanently revoked, blacklist the sadist, sacked on the spot, oh and bend the <deleted> of a teacher over and do the exact same to him in front of his pupils - I would bet he has a history of such offenses. See if he ever attempts an act of such abhorrence again - if he were ever able to work in a school again, which of course he shouldn't be. For anyone who thinks that's too harsh, just imagine it was your kid pictured above. If it were my child he'd left those marks on, he'd see the above as getting off lightly. Popular Post Spidey
My 6 year old son was hit and verbally abused by his teacher at scool. When my wife called her to ascertain the facts, she verbally abused my wife! We both went to the school the next day and asked to see the headteacher but were fobbed off with the head of department. She refused to let us speak to the teacher or even speak to her herself. Said she would observe the teacher for a week and report back to us. We immediately removed him from the school.

Popular Post snowgard
Unbelievable!!! Why the parents not report it to the police and open a criminal and civil case against the teacher? The school director don't will be helpful in this case. 3

Lets be honest, the principles or headmasters in schools are in league with the teaching administration and teachers, and will do the utmost to keep the lid on any exposure. If an independent committee is what it takes to come to a conclusion regarding the "injuries" sustained in the so called punishment then let it be! However I would have gone to the police and reported the teacher for actual bodily harm and pressed for a criminal investigation & charges to be pressed!!
Popular Post GalaxyMan
There is no possible way that there can be justification for a teacher violently assaulting a 12-year-old student. The fact that they're looking into whether the 'punishment' was 'too severe' is beyond laughable and shows the pathetic mentality vis-a-vis violence towards other people in this society. Since when is it ever acceptable for an adult to violently assault a child? 4
Popular Post HHTel
This happens time and time again and the perp either goes unpunished or is given 'a slap on the wrist'. Corporal punishment in schools has been outlawed for the best part of 20 years. When is the law going to be enforced. A teacher abusing a student should be automatically dismissed and charged with assault! School principles and members of the education department who allow this 'glossing over' should also be taken to task. Every student should have Childline Thailand on their phone. The number is 1387 and once reported to them, they WILL take action. The severity is irrelevant and whether moderate or severe, the law is quite clear.

Bangkok Barry
In the Real world, the police and not the school (which of course has a vested interest in finding nothing wrong) would investigate the assault of a minor. But in Thailand no-one really expects the police to lift a finger to investigate anything. In the Thai way of thinking it's already happened and investigating it afterwards is a waste of time and effort. My brother-in-law is a police inspector. I asked my wife what he actually does and she had no idea. Sums it up rather well. 1
