It's actually (in most cases) quite straightforward. Some machines are a little more difficult to open up than others but with a little time and care it's doable.

Yes, it can be done with any Notebook,apart from some that utilise an SD card soldered to the Motherboard(eMMc).

The caveat is finding one that allows you to do so easily.

Business class laptops tend to have maintenance hatches for RAM and HDD, that allow you to swap drives in minutes. A fair amount of consumer laptops these days make it much more difficult to do so. The worst designs even compelling you to remove the keyboard to get to the storage drive.

 

So that is the thing of which you should be aware. Look for reference of how easy it is to get to the storage drive before purchase.

 

There are three main types of SSD, that is; SATA, M2 and NVMe, listed in order of cost. eMMc is just an SD card.

Some laptops will have two options within.

eMMc is usually utilised in 'disposable' low powered devices.

You don't need to move data if it's a new device. You can simply run a clean install of the OS. Nevertheless it is easy enough to clone the old drive if you wish to do so.

Just choose a software that gives the option to optimise the clone for SSD.

 

But my choice would always be for a clean install of the OS.

having to install your own SSD to save few $$$ is plain stupid for me, but at the same time I am not a cheap charlie.

I buy computers with original windows 10 and changing the HDD for SSD would be a problem anyway as Windows is already on the HDD.

Pay around 25000 thb and get a nice laptop with i5 or similar ryzen and 240 ssd + 8gb ram. Is it really over the top for most people ?!

I recently bought a new Acer Swift 3 via Lazada for 14,400 baht. Came with 8gb Ram and a 245 gb SSD with a 7th gen i3 7100U processor. No W10 but i added Linux Mint 19 for free. A nice machine, ideal for me. I agree SSDs are a must now.

I'm typing this on my thinkpad which has 215g ssd, 8 gig Ram - 500 ? (450) USD 3 years ago (bought in US). I can only imagine what they are selling it for now .... Unless you absolutely, positively  have to have it NOW. Buy it somewhere else, not Thailand.

One Tukcom shop at least will throw in a Windows if requesting an SSD fit.

sorry do you know if there are problems with the charger plug for laptops coming from US?

I'd like to follow your advice and buy one on ebay or Amazon from Us sellers but i am concerned about voltage issues and not sure an adaptor could be enough to solve the problem

Yes, I haven’t noticed electronic components deteriorating over time either. In my experience, most problems with computers occur fairly soon after purchase if they’re going to occur at all. I’ve been running a desktop PC 24/7 for the last 8 years with no issues.

Acer is pretty bad, or at least it was. Companies do improve their products, so I don't know if this is the case with Acer.

16GB of RAM is totally unnecessary for the average user. Especially if you have an SSD fitted. I don't know why people make these random statements without qualification.

With SSD fitted, even 4GB is fine for the average user. 8GB( gaming, some video editing). 16 GB for specialised users(gaming, VM etc)

I wouldn't argue with that.  When I upgraded my laptop from 4GB to 8GB I got a "little bit" of improved performance, both benchmark-wise and "I could see/feel the difference" on some programs, but nothing to write home to Mom about.

If the RAM is cheap, then perhaps why not. But always SSD first and then look for bottleneck if there is one.

My device with 8GB of RAM is super responsive. But then it has the rest of the components to match.

I must be an exceptionally heavy user then? ... I don't even play games or heavy video editing 

 

My w10 computers now  have 12-16gb of ram and they have no trouble using all or most of it to keep everything running smoothly....

( all have M2, msata or sata ssds )

   With no disk activity and CPU at only 3% something something is definitely eating up your RAM....maybe you have a lot of programs open in the background not really doing anything at the time of the snapshot based on the low CPU usage/no disk activity....maybe you have dozens of static browser tabs open, or maybe some RAM caching program like how Samsung SSDs can use Magician RapidMode to dedicate RAM (amount of your choosing) to SSD caching.   Or maybe you have some GPU which allows you to allot main RAM to it?

 

  But below is my memory snapshot of my laptop i7 CPU, 500GB SSD, and 8GB RAM with only one Chrome browser tab open with MS Office Outlook 2016 open in the background.....only using 3.1GB of the 8GB RAM installed. 

 

  And I can tell you if I still had 4GB it would show around 2.8GB of 4GB RAM because I made it a point to take a look just before I updated to 8GB RAM as I wanted to see how much RAM my computer would use with only one or two basic programs open like one browser tab and Outlook email with two different amounts of RAM installed.  The computer started using a little more RAM with 8GB probably because it offloaded some Windows drive pagefile usage to memory.

What puts you in a position to decide whether someone has something important on their computer? 

 

Up to date Av, malware, and a firewall are basic defences on any Conputer you use to manage finances, online banking, cryptocurrency or stock market trading accounts but i maybe "idiots" like you wouldn't understand
