Nong Khai, 11 December 2018 (NNT) -Thailand's Minister of Transport has inspected Nong Khai railway station as part of mobile cabinet meeting in upper northeastern provinces.

Transport Minister Arkhom Termpittayapaisith says the mobile cabinet will focus on the projects in the upper northeastern provinces of Loei, Nong Bua Lam Phu, Udon Thani, Nong Khai and Bung Kan . The Ministry of Transport will report the progress on several projects to the cabinet, mostly on the highway and rural road projects including a discussion between government and private sector to develop the road network in this cluster.

Regarding the railway projects, he said both dual track and high-speed rail projects are developing rapidly.

The construction of the first phase of dual tracks between Nakhon Ratchasima and Khon Kaenis 90 percent comple. The second phase from Khon Kaen to Nong Khai will be submitted to the cabinet on January to approve the 26 billion baht estimated budget.

As for high-speed rail, the Thai-Chinese cooperation project is separated into 2 phases. The contract for the 3.5km first phase between Bangkok and Nakhon Ratchasima is already signed and construction is underway. The contract for the other 13km section will be signed in December this year.

The second phase, from Nakhon Ratchasima to Nong Khai , is in the process of detailed design, which will be completed within 8 months. The budget for the second phase of high-speed rail is about 211 billion baht. Once complete, the public will be able to travel between Bangkok and Nong Khai in around three and a half hours at speeds of up to 250 km/hr.

There will be two high-speed rail stations in Nong Khai, one for people and another for goods. Nong Khai will be the interchange station of transportation between Thailand, the Lao PDR and China in the future.

I am equally mystified. Does anyone have a clue as to what he is talking about?

The first phase BK-NR is 250km while the second phase NR to NK is about 380km for a total of 630km.

Perhaps he is talking about a total of 3.5 + 13.0 kms in the first phase. If that 16.5 km conservatively takes 4 years to build it means at that rate of progress the complete line should up and running in 150 years or the year 2168. Of course they could double productivity in which case it would be ready about by 2090.

They have already set the prices for the fares which seems a bit premature.  The new Bang Sue station will soon be ready to accept HS trains. That should should be cause for a gala celebration by the political elite, probably just prior to the election.

Never in a month of Sundays  :cheesy:

Prayut has called for its speed to be reduced to between 160 to 180kph in order to save unspecified costs.

Numerous articles published in Thai Visa reference 180kph as the top operational speed.

The irony is that regardless of what speeds the train operates at in Thailand, its top speed through Laos will be 150kph.

That accounts for 16.5 km of track.  What about the other 245 kilometers?

I can just see the slaughter now as cars, motorcycles, pedestrians, buffalo, dogs, etc simply fail to grasp 21st Century technology such as trains that can travel between 150 to 250 kph.  After multiple high-speed disasters, the trains will probably be limited to less than 100 kph.
