Weekly crackdown nets hundreds more foreigners

Another 537 foreigners were arrested by Immigration police on Thursday after raids on 225 locations around the country targeting those living illegally in Thailand.

 

Pol Maj Gen Itthitpol Itthisarnronnachai, deputy commissioner of the Immigration Bureau, held a press conference in central Bangkok at 1.45am on Friday to announce the results of the 27th Operation X-Ray Outlaw Foreigner.

 

Itthitpol said the latest arrests followed searches by immigration officials on 225 places frequented by foreigners, including language and normal schools.

 

He said 45 were charged with overstaying their visas, 284 with sneaking into Thailand without visas and 208 with staying or working in the Kingdom without informing the authorities of their residential addresses or work places.

 

So far 5,978 foreigners have been arrested as a result of 6,013 searches nationwide in 41 operations.

 

These searches were earlier named “Operation Black Eagles” because they focused on those from Africa, Nigeria, but have since been given the less provocative title of “Operation X-Ray Outlaw Foreigner”.

I'm so confused...Big Joke has said before there are no more overstayers left...he found and kicked them all out.  But now he said he just found 45 more.   Since I'm not good at Thai math I will blame my confusion on myself.

I show them to my colleagues-none of whom evince the slightest desire to visit Big Joke's paradise..

 

..but two have been before and one,at least,was contemplating it!

 

I also show them photos of Thailand's construction sites-commonly referred to as tourist attractions,resorts, and exotic locations-but that is off topic..

These, now 'negative numbers', must therefore be Thai/luk krung scapegoats he's moved on to,  and wants them out of the country probably for their subversive, independent thinking.

I dare say that with Thailand's bribeable immigration and porous borders, the number deported may be correct but that probably includes the same people numerous times.

and when we get off the plane, the condo, hotel or house owner also needs to report that we are staying at the address we wrote when obtaining the visa and on the plane. That's what I call acting in a sinergy

Today it’s the black man and Indians, six months from now it could be raids on the homes of every retiree and married foreigner, looking for anything that gives them a reason to show them to the door. It could also be an indirect attack, where they double the financial requirements and raise the age limit by 10 years. How many would that hit?

Or it may simply be what it is... Immigration doing their jobs and targeting people who are in country illegally.... 

 

While I wouldn't cheer this operation, I have no problem with the Immigration Police doing their jobs... The fact that they are Immigration Police kind of means they aren't really very interested in the Thai's...

 

I agree that there have been a few xenophobic sound bites recently - I believe this to be nothing more than the older ignorant guys opening their mouths without actually thinking before they speak... 

 

If any of us were in the Immigration Police - who would we be checking up on? First stop would be area's like Sukhumvit Soi 3 down to Asoke and profiling the obvious.

This "new" title is nonsensical, and, I suppose, typically Thai, who don't seem to want to employ persons well-versed in English usage.  We all know of examples of extreme gobbledygook which has clearly been cobbled together by a Thai who thinks he/she is proficient with the English language.

 

I presume they meant to say "shine a spotlight" on outlaw foreigners, or something more eloquent than "x-ray".

I am a little concerned about the "reporting residence" category, as my Thai landlord is not efficient about such.
Is the requirement more stringent for holders of work permits? Are we supposed to re-report every time we exit the Kingdom for a one or two day trip, but return to our same, leased address?
