I'm asking on behalf of the family of a person that has recently passed away. They want to access his computer but it's protected. Does anyone know somewhere that might be able to do this without losing all the data i.e. not a total reset.

Open it up, take out the battery reboot. Put back battery password gone. Or put a piece of aluminum foil in the battery space and insert battery. Reboot, put it back in place like the original--password gone. If it is a PC

Take out the hardrive, insert into an enclosure, access all files from another pc.

Assuming the op system is password protected and not the file folders.
