Popular Post rooster59
Corruption in Thailand likened to a disease: And it needs to be cured! Image: Daily News The National Anti-Corruption Commission has likened corruption in Thailand to a disease. And it has suggested that the cure is to take action each and every time the "symptoms" are spotted. They have produced a cartoon poster to advise people what to do. The symptom of the problem (corruption) is caused by covering your ears, eyes and mouth. The result of so doing it economic problems for the country and personal ruin. The treatment is simple: Speak up each and every time corruption rears its head. The cartoon character in the third box was a member of the public with what appeared to be a policeman. Daily News said that corruption and Thailand had gone hand in hand since for ever. While it may not be a part of daily life for everyone it was a big problem especially when people did nothing about it. Thais have been criticized both from within and outside the country for tolerating and even taking an active part in facilitating corruption. The message was that this has to stop in order for corruption to cease. Source: Daily News -- © Copyright Thai Visa News 2019-01-26 1

Popular Post Lungstib
Corruption is not only endemic in the people but its in the system. When you owe a superior for your promotion there will likely come a time when it needs paying back. The lack of social equality is the start of all this corruption, you must never criticise those above you, hence you can not report them. 34

Popular Post Pilotman
My Thai wife paid the police to investigate a motorbike accident involving one of our family, They would not move on it until she paid them 5,000 Baht. When I pointed out how wrong and corrupt this was, she just shrugged and said to me that is how the system works. She was not in the slightest bit bothered by it, and this from a lady who spent 19 years in the UK. If people like her accept it as normal, nothing will ever change. 35 4

Popular Post PatOngo
Corruption is inspirational to Thai's, it inspires them to join the police force, it inspires them to join the army, inspires then to become public officials and politicians, the spoils are endless, without this inspiration, where do they go? I can't see any change in the middle to far distant future. 13 2

Patronage is at the heart & soul of Thai culture and the social political structure. The powers that be are in no hurry to change. 5

Popular Post Puchaiyank
I laugh out loud when people come on this forum and claim they have lived here for years and have no personal experience with corruption. My experience has me double checking every significant money transaction to make sure I am not being taken advantage of. One real estate agent was eager to get me to sign final documents where she had added an additional 100k baht she would have pocketed if gone undetected. Her response when caught in the act...she was offended that I would take the time to double check her docs...???? 6 1

I have been trained to ALWAYS check and recheck when making significant transactions because they are culturally predisposed to cheating, stealing and otherwise taking advantage of people. This is as true for the market vendor as the mall chain retail shop. As true for the biggest Thai banks as for the small money exchangers. 95 times out of a hundred, in my experience, if a Thai has an opportunity to lie, cheat or steal, he/she will do so without much concern. 8 1
Popular Post pattayadgw
Corruption... Get rid of "inactive posts" for those caught wrongdoing and prosecute / fine and/or put in jail Get rid of ludicrous multi billion dollar projects and instead increase all public servants pay scales ie: teachers, police +++. Once the pays have been increased to a reasonable level inform all public servants that if caught taking bribes or being involved in any form of corruption or illegal activity they will not only lose their jobs / pensions etc. but will be sent to the "big house" for an extended holiday

Yes they really showed their bias at that one. Would be nice if there was a real non bias organisation in this country that went after corruption. They would be working 24/7 to make a small dent. Until the Thais themselves start to really vote for non corrupt people and not only support action against the corruption of their political enemies but also against corruption on their own side nothing will change.
