Illegal wildlife hunting  scandal – One year on

The trial of one of Thailand’s top construction tycoons, Premchai Karnasuta, for alleged illegal wildlife hunting moves into its final stage as the Thong Pha Phum provincial court has scheduled the reading of the verdict on March 19, 2019 according to Seub Nakhasathien Foundation chairman Sasin Chalermlarb, who was speaking on the first anniversary of the incident.

In his lengthy Facebook post on the scandal, Sasin said that one panther had been sacrificed in return for the exposure of the dark side of Thailand’s construction mogul, Premchai Karnasuta, who has become best known in Thailand and across the World, not because of his construction empire but for his alleged involvement in illegal wildlife hunting in Thung Yai Naresuan wildlife sanctuary in Thailand’s western province of Kanchanaburi.

Sasin added that, from the day of Premchai’s arrest by wildlife officials, Thai people have shown they are against his alleged conduct, appreciate the natural abundance of the sanctuary and feel the collective urge to protect the country’s natural heritage.

So was it a Black Panther now or a Bearcat?
And if it's a Bearcat why keep calling it a Black Panther why not just tell the facts?

Oh yes my mistake so it was a Black Leopard then.
Very rare and difficult to find.
Interesting though seems they were guests of the National Park Director.

Khon Anurak Facebook page disclosed that Mr Premchai was “a guest” of the director of the Department of National Parks, Wildlife and Plants Conservation’s Wildlife Conservation Office for the visit to the wildlife sanctuary.

Also interesting from that article:

It was the second time in almost 50 years for the controversial hunting at Thung Yai Naresuan wildlife sanctuary by well-known and influential people.

In the incident on 29 April 1973, a large group of about 60 hunters who included top government officials businessmen and a well-known movie star was found to go hunting in the area.

The hunting was revealed after the army helicopter used to transport the hunters back from Thung Yai Naresuan crashed, killing six of them in Bang Len district of Nakhon Pathom.

Sadly, I think that the maximum penalty he will get is a large fine, which will be peanuts to him or a suspended jail sentence.

Could also depend on whether he quits Italian Thai but we will see.

One year on...

Quote

An air passenger who arrived in India from Thailand has been detained at the airport after customs officers found a month-old leopard cub in his luggage.

Suspicions were raised when officials heard noises coming from his bag, which was found to contain the 2.2lb (1kg) cub hidden in a plastic grocery basket.

What ever the fine will be, Khun Premchai has stayed to face the trial and has not run,

One wonders what the next person will face once this verdict is given,

maximum permissible as a basic standard would be nice with an option to push to a higher court for further increase.

Why don't they just order the guy to set up and pay for a breeding program for the big cat species that he killed.  Set some realistic new cub targets and fine Premchai if they are not met each year.

Big cat population wins, national park wins, Premchai get to use the program as a social responsibility marketing tool for Italy Thai, and the corrupt authorities cant filter of any lump sum paid to the court as a fine.

Although a fantastic suggestion there is no way it will happen - far too intelligent to put into motion, and nothing in it for the hanger on's.

While ya'alls out there chasing dem darn animal killers (which is very very bad) how about some seious investigations into the Thailand child market. Many a poor Thai mother/father willing to sell their children to the smuggling market, the child life forever stolen.
