Buy dark chocolate

Featured Replies

My Thai gf tells me she cannot find any Western dark chocolate in BKK. Western meaning imported from Australia, UK or elsewhere. Any suggestions where I can buy some will be appreciated.

Both brands are inexpensive, compared to other imported brands.

Yes the Tesco's own chocolate is really great taste and value. I bought the dark chocolate with orange today.

Do not know nor care, it tasted great. Fine as a once in a while treat.

So many dark chocolates (from 50% up to 90%).

Hardly a major supermarket chain without.

Ritter from Germany is also almost everywhere (50%, 70%).

From Australia, UK?

No, who would want this

Lindt chocolate

Dark with hazelnut, one of my favorites.

100gr price when I came to Thailand: 84 Baht.

Today up to 113.

Ritters seems to be the only dark chocolate that is reasonably priced here.

Villa have Bournville.

Not all dark chocolate are the same. True dark chocolate has a very high  % of cacao around 70 +

most supermarkets sell sugary low percentage crap

I herb have a good selection

https://th.iherb.com/pr/Valor-Intense-Dark-Chocolate-70-Cacao-3-5-oz-100-g/66579

Lindt has several varieties of 3 oz real dark choc bars here, usually priced 110b+.

The standard one is 72% cacoa, and then there's a more expensive 85 or 95% one...

The 72% ones are widely available at many supermarket places in BKK....

I buy and like the taste of the Tesco's Finest chocolate with orange bar, but it doesn't have a particularly high cacao content, around 44-45%.  In other words, it's sweet like regular chocolate, whereas the real dark chocolate tends to have a more bitter unsweetened flavor.

The real dark chocolate with a high cacao content is actually supposed to be relatively good for your health eaten in moderation. If memory serves, for health purposes, you want a nutrition label for the chocolate that has roughly similar values for protein and sugar content.  The sweeter chocolate has much higher sugar content.

Never seen these two products in either a Tesco or Big C.  And I have been here for decades and always go on the shopping trips.  Where are you located?

This one is widely available and cheaper than Lindt.....

If may say it depends where you live...they are available at the superstores in BKK not the mini branches near me. However, my local superstore at Laski might not have them for a week or two whereas the ones nearer expat areas  (On-Nut for example) may/will be better stocked on a more regular basis.

This is for tesco's BKk and I'm not sure about upcountry.

Where have you been shopping for decades?

If you want good quality make sure the Cocoa Butter which is the fat is a lot lower than the Cocoa Mass which is the actual chocolate. Lindt, Guylian and Godiva are good quality

Big C Extra  have Casino black chocolate, yes very good and not too much expensive

black chocolate is very good for this health when at 75% chocolate

Yes, agree with your comments and regarding Tesco Lotus, I buy their 85% Cacao cooking chocolate at about 65 baht a large bar, along with a small bag of crystallised orange and make my own orange chocolate bar and store it in the fridge. Unfortunately it doesn't stay there long enough!

And as for Big C, their own Casino brand of 85% Cacao chocolate is a steal at 69 baht a bar and unfortunately my waistline gives that fact away!!

lots in Pattaya North Big C, so I can't believe that you cant find it in BKK.

Rimping also has blocks of excellent dark chocolate in a block, in the baking section:

It's intended for baking, but well edible as a snack.

Bought is many times for my teenage granddaughter who likes to bake, at Rimping on the river, at NIM center and at Promenada.

There's some/a lot of off brand name, cheaper chocolate in Thailand that's coming from China... And speaking personally, I try to avoid any food or drink products manufactured in China for safety/health reasons.

So I'm content to pay a bit more for Lindt or other brands manufactured elsewhere and probably with better core ingredients.

You really have to be careful where a lot of the food products sold in Thailand are coming from... To my surprise and dismay, for example, I noticed sometime back that the Snickers chocolate bars sold in Thailand are manufactured in China, unlike the more common American product. I like Snickers, but don't want a Snickers made in China!
