Reinvent your summer style

Winter is slowly coming to an end. We know it’s hard to tell the seasons apart in Bangkok, but now it’s summer again and it’s time to get that ultimate summer look.

It is safe to assume that everyone has their own personal style that they’ve grown accustomed to and are comfortable being identified with. However, as the seasons change, a man of style wouldn’t want to be left behind.

Here are a few style essentials to help you look your sunny best:

Fabrics

Dos: Cottons. Linens. Lyocell. Silk.

Do Nots: Nylon. Polyester.

There are a few misconceptions when it comes to fabrics and what they’re supposed to feel or look like. Most people wouldn’t know that denim can be 100% cotton or even 100% linen, and that there are many such brands of the same natural fibres that are appropriate for warm climates. Switching to summer fabrics doesn’t mean abandoning your personal style completely. For example, if you’re a jeans and t-shirt kind of guy, then you could trade in your heavy denims for lighter chambrays, and your wools and polys for some seersuckers.

The trick is achieving comfort and breathability from your clothes without looking like you’re trying too hard to keep up with the cast of the Mama Mia movie. A subtle balance is key.

Colours

The right choice of colours should be determined by your personal taste, skin complexion, and where you wear your clothes (work, travel…etc). The return of summer means it is time to step out of the shadows and try out the colours you’ve avoided all winter.

There are a few ways to get tastefully colourful without flipping your personal style upside down;

  1. Try switching out your usual contrast favourites for the tonal versions of themselves.

Try a soft violet instead of blue, and lilac instead of red or purple. In a city where it is almost summer all year, it is easy to run out of colours to wear. It helps if you can blend in and stand out at the same time. Tones are the best way to do this.

      2. Take advantage of the palette. Tonal colours have one great characteristic in common; they all easily blend with each other. So, wear your peach with your corals and enjoy a colourful summer.

Patterns

Summer is the season to pull out your florals and paisleys. That brings us back to the paradoxical trick of trying to blend in without getting camouflaged in the crowd, yet stand out at the same time. There are no rules, only personal taste. That said, it helps to know which patterns to add, and which to avoid.

Dos: Hairline stripes, bayadere stripes, tattersall checks and brocade.

Don’ts: Regimental stripes, Harlequin and argyle checks.

Thin strips in tonal colours have the power to create a summer feeling in any attire, and if you want to go bold then brocade is a great choice.  With brocade it’s best to stay away from the hard contrasts, and choose bold prints with a soft undertone. When a pattern offers subtle variety, it will help your look scream summer.

We understand why people fall in love with prints, and just can’t get enough of Argyle checks, houndstooth, and shepherds checks. Really. They are classics that work for a cosy night out as well as a day at the office all year round. Sadly, they tend to scream winter and are difficult to colour-wash. That’s why we stay away, just for the summer.

There isn’t a more fashionably flexible and exciting season than summer, and we could go on and on about the options. As a start, look inside your wardrobe and see how and where to apply our style tips to improve your look.

Good luck and happy summer!
