(Reuters) - Rolling Stones frontman Mick Jagger said on Friday he was "on the mend" after undergoing surgery that caused postponement of the band's planned North American tour.

The 75-year-old British singer underwent heart valve replacement surgery in New York earlier this week, according to media reports.

Jagger and his representatives did not provide details of the surgery but said it had gone well.

"Thank you everyone for all your messages of support, I’m feeling much better now and on the mend - and also a huge thank you to all the hospital staff for doing a superb job," Jagger wrote on Twitter.

His U.S. publicist said the treatment had been successful and that Jagger was expected to make a full recovery.

Jagger's need for surgery forced the Rolling Stones last weekend to postpone its entire North American tour that had been due to start later this month.

Billboard magazine, citing unidentified sources, said the surgery involved the replacement of a heart valve by going through Jagger's femoral artery.

The procedure, known as transcatheter aortic valve replacement, or TAVR, is an increasingly widely-used alternative to surgical valve replacement that requires the chest to be opened. TAVR typically allows for shorter hospital stays and quicker recovery times.

The Rolling Stones tour is now expected to begin in July, Billboard said.

Years back, my buddy Joe gave Mick a guided tour of Bangkok.  Joe and I were in the same Peace Corps group and he went on to write the Lonely Planet guidebook for Thailand.

I remember Joe writing about it later, he said Mick asked him to keep quiet about it at the time. Mick was a great companion apparently.

Nearly 57 years ago I was lucky enough to get into The Marquee on Oxford St for your first gig and later at the Ealing Club, Ealing Broadway. Great then, legendary now. Get well soon Sir Mick, the world is watching. Time is certainly on your side.

For me I think it was the Woolwich Odeon...????

I saw them live in the 90's for the first time.  That energy coming from the stage is unbelievable.

November 30, 1981, Pontiac Silverdome, Pontiac, Michigan on the "Tattoo You" tour. Opening Acts: The Clash, Iggy Pop AND Santana.  Three coaches made the trip from my university in Kitchener, Ontario down to Pontiac. The only bad part was that we had to consume all of our "herbal remedies" before we got to US border, so my memories of anything after the bus ride are only sporadic.

Saw them again in Macau in 2014, 33 years after Pontiac. Still a great show and Sir Mick was all over the stage.  Keith seemed to be slowing down a bit but he will always be a legend.

heart surgery gives new meaning to "Start Me Up".

The heart is important cause you can't live without it - unlike the brain ...

I saw them at RFK Stadium in Washington, DC in 1972.  Lots of energy.  And a bit of teargas wafting in from the parking lot.

With all the toxic stuff these lads injected in their veins during their glory hole years, amazing they did not explode.

Strong chaps,  and wish you many more healthy years despite your crazy drug patterns and don't stop rock n'roll.

It's all a big scam, just look at him; Mick Jagger has been dead for years.   He's a Zombie for goodness sake. So is Richards, but that's another medical story for another time.  As we all know of course, Charlie Watts is a Alien and the only one that is actually alive (mostly) and almost human is Ronnie.

 Do you work for Twitter?

I'm one of those freaks who has never used Twitter or had a Facebook account, and I'm actually pretty sure that Mick has never been to this forum, so ......
