I like the no 3rd man up rule.

Ruckman were nearly extinct 10 years ago,now once again they will have a chance to dominate games.

Goldstien for the brownlow anybody.

That's my take on it too. Kinda talking the game back to more old school contest and giving the primacy of the tap ruck a better means of plying his trade at the bounce.

goldsteen ya reckon. Nah, gawn/

But the coaches are divided on it.

2 rule changes in 100 years hardly equates to tinkering endlessly dear Mr Books, and I'm not comparing im saying, Gridiron is a way more complex game than AFL, we the average joe can stomach the odd rule change but its become a god dam joke.

What's next? 50 meter arch from the goal square where only the 3 forwards can be in when the ball is within 20 meters is that next?

How about 3 vertical lines evenly spaced running the length of the ground....flankers to one side centre line players stay in the middle only ruck, rovers and ruck rovers can cross the line?

How about if you take a specie with the 50 meter arch and you score a goal you get 12 points instead of 6 but if you pass it to a player that scores the goal then its 9 points, if he should pass it to a third player and he scores the goal its 7 points...

I could dream up a lot more merda if you like...

Gridron is way LESS complex.

gridiron is an immensely structured game, slowed down for a very Low IQ viewing audience and to maximise ad revenue. This slowness and stoppage of play gives the game an illusion of being supremely complicated, while in reality, the time lag they give to plays merely highlight the options available to any given play.

The play options for an specific given play in Aussie Rules are far greater than any specific play in Gridiron, because because Gridiron has more restrictions on play and movement.

As for the Soccer rules...those changes were a bit like taking away the 'behind kick in' and doing away with a centre bounce in the AFL....
Pretty massive stuff

Now ALex, if you want to come up with stripey lines and speccy points, I'd say submit to the AFL....If you want the rules of the game to stay in a state of animated suspense while sports sciences advances move forward, you are entitled to that desire.

Wow what a statement on Gridiron.....Fella you left your hat at Union Mall....

Complex has nothing to do with how quick or slow a game moves, obviously you havent watched to many NFL games, there are laws even the commentators dont know about, the Umps call it on the ground, when in need call up a vid check see....I seen some real drop kicks heading into the hockey there,  its a brawl camouflaged as a game, seen some real drop kicks at AFL games too....can testified, been beating up by a little old lady Swans supporter with her umbrella one time at the G in the days i had a lot to say about how things were going on out on the ground... Them days the Swans weren't much chop kid....either were we so we were well matched....

Play options for AFL are ramble ramble ramble, you on lighter fluid?

Come on man....Gridiron is human chess....no can run a player into form in that game...unlike in Aussie rules.....your full forward is out of touch today so throw him into the ruck or on to the ball for a quarter to find touch....cant do that with a running back or wide receiver or a corner back....  Game Plays???? 3rd and 5, the quarter back calls a play you need to be on the 56 yard line to take that catch to make first down, your tight end is covered so option 2 is a wide receiver who's covered bingo interception run back for a TD...game over...differant game but far more skilful than AFL, high turn over of players in the NFL and the reason is, you MUST preform, that running back might only be used for short yardage, means he needs to get that 1, 2 or 3 yards he's a specialist in a tight situation, cant do it goodbye...he might have only been in 3 plays the whole game...same with a wide receiver, might play in 60% of offensive plays needs to catch that ball fella or he will be playing in the back yard 2's Detroit car city....

You misunderstod..

Gridiron is made to look more complex because of the speed the play moves...that give more time for analytics etcetera..

The comparison with chess would be the same if AUssie rules stopped after each play and it was dissected where and what would happen...

AFL has infinitely more options for every play and infinitely more plays per game .. this clearly makes the game MORE complex than Gridiron

Your argument about players being able to move around in AFL only illustrates my point of Aussie rules being FAR more complex....Gridiron is just too simple and rigid to allow for this to happen

Bullocks....AFL game plays are not as complex as Gridiron, in AFL the set play is that direction fellas....i said it a few times...kicking backwards and across the ground is a soccer tactic in setting the play that Allen Jeans got the Hawks to play back in the 80's, rather than game play id call it a series of styles for want of a better name as game play is hard to define because of first its non stop play action second turn overs changes the set play into something else....

Maybe we have a misunderstanding on "game play" Gridiron....you have a set play the guy needs to be somewhere within a certain time frame if he's covered there will be option 2 after that is hail mary full of grace as is in the AFL....flooding, hand ball at all costs were game style of yesterday year, now days its hold the ball, grundge tackling get the ball out to a outside mid and off we go...

Full on running games have far less structure, games like Gridiron require a lot more "head" the player has to be on the ball the moment he sets foot on the ground, no distraction has to get the job done, they have just seconds to make that play.

I watched a Raiders Vs Texan's game in LA, the Raiders trailed for 3 quarters and didn't look like they could get going yet just 10 points down....the wheels feel off in the 4th for the Texan's, all of a sudden big plays came out of nowhere for the Raiders, what looked lost was turned around into a win...

What you have described is the opposite of complex.  It is structure, Gridiron has rigid structures.

AFL is more complex because there are so many thousands of variables coming from any one play and those variables are multiplied by thousands per play every few seconds, basically.

Gridiron simply cannot have the amount of variables, therefore the level of complexity, due to its limitations on handling and movement

Seems simple to understand

Rohan Connolly has a nice write up on the third man-up rule change and agrees with many pov of shared here. Even the the dislike of changes; but I think he gets the summary right in this article.

Ruck and rule changes help restore the AFL game we knew

AFL rule changes are seldom, if ever, greeted with jubilation and dancing in the streets. So the public backlash to the banning of the third man up in ruck contests was fairly predictable.

Read on at -

http://www.theage.com.au/afl/afl-news/ruck-and-rule-changes-help-restore-the-afl-game-we-knew-20161222-gtggfp.html

I did like this though, "But if you're a part of the "leave the rules alone" brigade presumably on the basis of keeping the game as it has been played traditionally, this is one rule change about which you should be pleased."

Something for everyone.

Rush down to AFL House and slip that idea into the suggestion box, Alex.

Teams have a tendency to flood the back-line, and the overcrowding often degenerates into a stodgy rugby scrum.   Coaches are under intense pressure for results, which come at the expense of an entertaining contest.

Alas, team tactics and manipulation of the rules is like controlling a pandemic superbug.   As soon as pharmacists find an antidote, the virus mutates to stay one step ahead.

Yep. Remember Terry Wallace as Richmond coach 2007ish. Dead man walking and the architect of flooding. Yet 2005, between jobs write this article.

Flooding tactics wrecking the game: Wallace

http://www.abc.net.au/news/2005-04-05/flooding-tactics-wrecking-the-game-wallace/1546094

Hypocrisy ... because he had too?!1. The game does evolve radically, quickly necessitating 'judicial' rule changes.

You bring up an interesting point Alex

Far from being my thread, it is a continuation of a thread started back in 2012 and is the 4th so far

Fortunately for all, ThaiVisa's resident History buff, Chimpy has kept records of AFL threads here on TVF and has allowed me access to his computer archives.

The first ever AFL thread was started by a rather queer fellow of the name JinjinSwing. Here it is! http://www.thaivisa.com/forum/topic/543333-australian-rules-football-for-the-aussies-in-thai/

JinJin was an old time Australian Drag Queen, working the circuit in the fleshpots of Kings Cross where he was a cabaret and burlesque singer. In his twilight years he moved to Pattaya Thailand, trying to relive his glory crooning days, but alas, The Filipino Ladyboys had corned the market.

As fate would have it, JinJin Slipped on a bar of soap while in the shower with one of the Filipino Ladyboys, and out of respect for his passing, a New 2nd thread was started in December 2014 by Chooka. http://www.thaivisa.com/forum/topic/687514-australian-rules-football-2014-tipping-chat-the-dream-team/

This thread was to run until January 2015, at which time we decided to update the Title from 'Australian Rules Football 2014  to a more generic version.
Young Chooka was all set to start a new thread , but alas, in a remarkably eerie coincidence, young Chooka slipped on a bar of soap whilst in the jailhouse shower and died.

And there we have it, the history of the thread up until now

I know jinjinswing very well, not a drag queen or into lady boys fella.....when his team went down the gurgler in 2012 he got distracted by the BKK pretties...and the awful customer service especially on a pair of adidas he bought in Robinsons oh and trying to get a copy of photo shop in BKK all documented somewhere in here....

This incarnation is yours kid, you have a lovely way with words you should create an awards for the guys.....

Ps...i hear a whisper in the still wind coming from up in the tropical north....in other words have you gone upcountry into the desolate wastelands of isaan to give WILL is back to back trophy? I'm talking about the silver plated one you have for  him not his trophy wife...

Don't mess with the croc!!

"How about this thread is left for the tipping competition and the brawls can be played out in the non pinned threads below? :o

There's four or five threads devoted to England and their adventures." [circa 2006]

And the lost epitaph for the working man : "Ni dieu ni maître!"

What happened to that?

Nice win/ or as Lance corp Jones might say... you "stuck it up em!"
