The Songkran holiday period could be wet in more ways than one - the meteorological office has issued a severe storm warning for the entire upper area of the country from today until Tuesday.

The north, Isaan, eastern seaboard and central regions including Bangkok and surrounding areas could all be hit.

Met office director Phuwiang Prakhammin warned of rain storms, thunder and lightning, high winds and some areas affected by hail.

People were warned to avoid open spaces, not to stand under trees as it is a lightning strike hazard and be careful of unstable advertising hoardings.

Farmers were warned about protecting their livestock and crops.

These are the provinces that are affected:

Northeast: Bueng Kan, Sakon Nakhon, Nakhon Phanom, Mukdahan, Khon Kaen, Chaiyaphum, Kalasin, Maha Sarakham, Roi Et, Yasothon Loei, Nong Bua Lamphu, Khon Kaen, Chaiyaphum, Nakhon Ratchasima, Buri Ram, Surin, Si Sa Ket and Ubon Ratchathani

Northern region: Chiang Mai, Chiang Rai, Phayao, Phrae, Nan, Lampang, Tak, Sukhothai, Uttaradit, Phitsanulok, Kamphaeng Phet, Phichit and Phetchabun

So Thailand has two Northeasts  and two Easts...

Confusing, but it looks like the first Northeast and East provinces listed have to watch out from the 13th to the 15th, while the second need to be careful on the 15th and 16th.

Actually, there is no prediction of rain for Chiang Mai according to this model as well as the usual weather sites. Strong winds yes, and hotter.

Even TMD.go.th shows only hot and sunshine in Chiangmai, as do all the other apps. So I guess we will continue to suffer.

No fear of that here in my area- they all get under the mattress when they hear the slightest rumble- along with the dogs

More government happy-talk.  "Honestly, there'll be rain to wash away the PM2.5 haze back to safe levels" <fingers crossed behind back>

No sign of rain yet...

But alant, this is government info. Since when do you pay serious attention to that?

BANGKOK, 13 April 2019 (NNT) – The Meteorological Department has issued a warning of tropical storms, thunderstorms, strong winds and hailstorms occuring during Songkran celebrations April 13 to April 16.

The upper part of Thailand is forecast to experience tropical storms, thunderstorms, strong winds, hailstorms and lightning. Members of the public are advised to take extra caution and avoid open spaces, being under big trees or near unstable roadside signs. Farmers are recommended to brace themselves for possible damage to their crops.

A high pressure system from China is forecast to prevail over the northeastern and eastern regions of Thailand and the South China Sea, causing tropical storms. Members of the public are advised to follow updates from the Meteorological Department, during Songkran.
