There has been 1,665 traffic accidents, with 174 deaths and 1,728 people injured in the first three days of the Songkran ‘seven days of danger’ (Thursday, Friday, Saturday). This equates to a significant drop from the 2018 road toll and lower even than Thailand’s average daily road deaths throughout the year.

According to the WHO an average 66 people die on Thailand’s roads each day.

The Road Safety Directing Centre’s numbers cover the period from April 11 to 13. The first three days show a drop of 17.1% in road deaths. Injuries are down 9.5%.

How sick, lower death toll being put forward as good news. One death is one too many, fanfare about a lower death toll, bloody sick bar stewards.

  • Down nearly 18%?   Don't believe it. More like the statistics have been massaged to make the carnage appear better.

  • How about waiting till the end of the holidays and all deaths have been added in, not just at the scene - that's the time to put the spin on it and justify as to why it's still same same....

So they managed to keep the death toll at the everyday's average of 60 dead and not the holiday average, still, 60 a day is way too many lives to be wasted, let's us hope that drives attitude has indeed changed for the better and that by the end of the holiday the more lives will be spread...

Oh please, how could you suggest such a thing, next thing you will be saying is TAT numbers a fake, goods on sale are fake, cops are corrupt, there was no coup illegal take over of the government, by military force.... surely not...

This is the lull before the storm. The travelling has stopped. The death rate will soar when the return journeys begin.

What is the ratio of cars, trucks vs. motorcycles?

  • Popular Post

How many died in hospital? Those numbers are not counted only deaths at the scene of the accident.

Does 'deaths' mean died at the scene?

How many died on their way to hospital, I wonder?

Nevertheless, it is all terribly sad, the carnage here.

Edited & @sakopete.

You got your post in before mine. 'Great minds' & all that.

More false figures from the Generals. It was quoted that 105 people had died in first 2 days now it's 174 in 3 days. I remember figures of 46 first day so that would be 59 on day 2 and 69 0n day 3. Umm I must have North Korean calculator figures seem to be going up or maybe the Govt is practising new trick in time for election result.

From what I have seen Songkran has been completely taken over by the Chinese leaving no room to crash????

Is their only task to cheat with the numbers? What else are they doing?

No other country that I am aware of does such an accounting, nor has such a high road accident rate. Coincidence?

Smoke and mirrors program is working?  Program 555 is back again!  Fix the traffic in Bangkok in 7 days, Fix the smog problem in 7 days,  is 7 the lucky number for " this is Thailand 7 "????

Just like the sudden drop in pm2.5 in the North last week right AFTER our great leader visited Chiangmai, we now see a sudden drop in traffic deaths right AFTER he said he was taken things serious. The gov pr-machine is working overtime!

????????????Would you rather have a higher death toll???? Yes it would be great to have no deaths on the road at all but any reduction in the death toll is good news in my book!

Being my usual cynical self, perhaps the lower figure is due to the drivers instead of being 'just drunk', but were comatose, therefore being physically unable to get into their vehicle.

A regime that will massage and manipulate election results will not hesitate to massage and manipulate road death results - when it suits them!

Rubbish. Deaths in hospital ARE recorded and added to the tally.

That fact has been widely reported in many sources.

It may well be 'reported' as you say, but I think the stats have been manipulated, to show a decrease, & excluding hospital deaths would be one way of doing so.

If that's the case, the mortuary freezers must be overflowing by now.

You totally misread my post, read it again, bit slower next time, then maybe you will understand it.

The Thailand sourced statistic only accounts for the day of the accident.

The WHO statistic also accounts for those that died of injuries sustained in the 30 days following the accident.    Most countries report on the 30 day basis.

The WHO has to adjust Thailand's numbers to determine a similarly based death rate fir the country.

Thailand's WHO styled numbers will be a lot higher (but not published) than you are reading in this or any other national news article.   But then, needing 30 days plus to be collected and compiled, they wouldn't be available until after the election results.

The only "fair" way judge how the country is doing in reducing road deaths is to compare its own numbers year on year.

I’m avoiding any drive my car in this 7 day !!!

maybe i will have more chance to longer live !

As many said the figures are "dodgy" ..By my calculations, 418 died in 7 days of Songkran in 2018 w/ 3900 injuries , no doubt some further deaths in that number as well...so 418 /7 = 58 deaths p/day & 3900/7 = 557 injuries p/day

Current figures given 174 deaths & 1728 injuries in 3 days equates to 174/3 = 60 deaths p/day,

1728/3 = 576 injuries p/day...

If anything figures are an increase on last year!!!!

Fairly straight forward calculations!!!

So, where is "significant drop from the 2018 road toll and lower even than Thailand’s average daily road deaths throughout the year." ????

The"...Road Safety Directing Centre’s numbers..." claims are total B/S....

Doubt been any significant change in Thailand's appalling Road Tolls.

Prayut, Prawit, RTP & rest of Gov't need to address the issue in a total & proper manner; not simply patches here & there.

Many problems to be resolved to start to improve Road & Traffic Management in Thailand, so all of Gov't needs to get on & do what paid to to do!!!!

Sunday I heard more Ambulances in one day than ANY OTHER day in the last 5-years living here....

maybe I heard 10......all i know is it was soo many i had to tell myself, 'OMG, everyone is dying."

Last figures I saw was about 80% fatalities were motorbikes. Can't say how accurate this is, but believable for me.
