Professional help with 'finding a balance in lifestyle'?

(I've seen the 'fat forum' but nothing much seems to be happening there)

Are there specialists/facilities known in the Pattaya region to really and effectively help expats consciously influence their calory balance? So I don't, as a remedy, want to be forced to eat thai cuisine 24/7/52.

It's reasonably healthy if one omits the sugar most Thais ladle on it to soften the spice. I get astonished looks when I use some spice, but omit the sugar.

Too much sugar and too much emphasis on white rice and noodle and sadly lacking in fibre.

Turn your attention to plenty of fruit and vegetables, whole grains and go light on red and processed meats.

And get some exercise.

Oh and strict limits on alcohol intake.

I know these rules and have largely complied for many years. And I thought I had my in and out calories under control, but growing older I find that sadly no.

There must be a way to really measure the figures (referring to the calories, for those jokers who will refer me to the scales), and if it takes the proverbial experts?

You may well loose weight quickly, but you would also loose out on the many vitamins, minerals, fibre and carbs that are essential to a healthy mind and body.

Sorry, this is absurd advice.

A balanced diet, exercise. (mental and physical) rest and good sleep are the key factors for a healthy lifestyle.

Yes of course exercise and a good nights sleep are essential also, but as far as food is concerned I can only urge you to do some research and by that I don't just mean reading the Daily Mail. I get all the vitamins and minerals my body needs. Carbs are not essential and don't constitute a real food group. Just do your research before you tell me that what I say is absurd. The main thing is to cut out chemicals and processed food.

Thai food is not fattening...stop with this charade.
Sugar in curries?...never felt any in my tastebuds
The only fattening stuff is those deep-fried snacks and fried chicken/pork

Where I come from, copious amounts of olive oil is applied onto anything....tons of bread (even with spaghetti[emoji33])....wine...etc etc
A billion calories per sitting...seriously.

Thai food is a joke (calorie-wise) but also taste-wise imo

Most fatties who complain are probably alcoholics...nothing to do w/food

I agree Thai food is not very healthy and they use very bad fat for cooking like soy and corn oil. Very unhealthy. Coconut oil would be better but I cook my steaks with a slab of butter in the air fryer yummy!

Yeah it's amazing how all that sugar is so beautifully disguised amidst all the spices. You wouldn't even know it's there.

And the fishoil and the frying oil almost everything is fried and contains loads of salt and sugar and rice is like bread and pasta not really callory free as well

Heavy drinkers I agree, but all heavy drinkers are not alcoholics, since I came to Thailand, any drinkers who I know, or have known are all overweight, though there was one who was not overweight and was an alcoholic and heavy smoker, but that was really an exception.

Keep yourself completely away from:

Potatoes, Rice, Pasta and Bread that brought me in just 2 month from 130Kg to 108Kg.

And now what I was eating:

Pork belly and Pork legs

Chicken

Pork Chops

Lamb Chops (min 6-8)

Soups (not these Bullion type of, no I am talking Pea, Lentil, Bean soups with a farmer's sausage and Pork belly)

And cook yourself, stay out of restaurants!

You do it a week and then you will start and think: Uuumm, not now, its too warm to cook, so you delay more and more until you reach breakfast and dinner (at 5 o'clock latest) skipping the lunch coz of the midday heat and self cooking.

(I forgot for breakfast: 3 fried eggs, tomato, bacon rashers (3-4) mushrooms and also a slice of bread (1/2 inch thick minimum.)

But stay cooking yourself a meal, do not eat outside (a salad is ok).. and only once a week 3-5 beers..

The belly that comes with the beers creates a massive panic but is next day gone again.

That was working wonder as the doctor denied my offshore health certificate..

I continued this "sinful" life and keep now at 98 Kg permanent.

There is nobody who can help but yourself..

All that cooking and shopping you must have gotten some good exercise as well. ???? Only kidding. Well done. I am just about to embark on a similar quest.

On balance, this is pretty good advice. Though more vegetables than fruit seems to be scientifically valid. If you eat a plant only based diet you won't even have to count calories. Try it. Won't hurt you!

Maybe try Weight Watchers?

Their plans are based on a points system where you're allocated a set amount of points (calories) to be used up each day, determined by factors such as your gender, lifestyle, age, etc. As long as you don't exceed your daily points allowance you'll lose weight, even more so should you consume less than the allocated points/calories and do increased exercise.

I'm assuming they don't have a presence in Thailand, however if you obtained their food/ingredient lists with the corresponding points it's easy enough to tailor your diet accordingly. Cooking meals yourself, ideally weighing the ingredients is a huge advantage, although it's always possible to guesstimate the points in a meal when eating out. It's a bit of a chore at first but you soon get used to it.

I know it worked for me.

The real question is how much are you exercising? Without exercise you are going to put on weight as you age and your metabolism slows down.  It really is that simple....

I used to use the following app. I found keeping a record and setting goals etc very helpful. Has a very large database and you can create your own meals / recipes and find out how much you are consuming. Free I believe. There is a school of thought out there that you shouldn’t actually calorie count... but I think you need to do what best suits you. (This is for iOS,  it I’m sure there’s one for Android). You can also add exercise if you do it. Very comprehensive.

I agree. When I first came to Thailand 18 years ago you rarely saw a fat kid but now they're everywhere

I don't care what you say but an exclusively plant-based diet is just unhealthy long term. But it can work as vegetarianism if you add dairy. There has never been a solely plant based society anywhere in the history of this earth Why, because it's a starvation diet and you won't get all the nutrients you need. I have a friend who fixes broken vegans, people who have come to the end of the road whose ideology has lost the argument to broken immune systems and serious diseases emerging, and what's particularly dangerous is that this diet has somehow become fashionable. Sure you can listen to the plant-based doctors who are being sponsored by the food companies but there are other nutritionists around who have a completely different view which is based on solid science. Human beings have been around and thrived for a long time but agriculture is only 10,000 years old, a mere blink of an eye on the time scale yet these muppet plant doctors want you to eat mostly grains and cereals and laughingly call them health foods! Look at them on YouTube. Take a good hard look. Do these people look healthy?

Visacrack, I've never counted a calorie in my life. I've simply learned over the years, by study and experience what works for me.

I have a set of scales and monitor my weight regularly. If it starts to climb I simply reduce my intake and increase my exercise. My core exercise is walking. Simple as that. I do others as well but walking is the key one.

And like I said before, controlling alcohol intake is also important. I actually gained 4Kg during Songkran through exceeding my usual one bottle per day. It will soon be gone. I've lost 2Kg already.

When it comes down to it Visacrack, it's all a matter of self discipline. Have you got it?

I used to use a local shop when I lived in Udon Thani, which I actually called 'The Fat Kid Shop'. 2 young boys who just grew fatter and fatter as the years went by.

In the last year I was there, they turned up at a street party at our neighbours and I got s chance to watch them eat.

Rice and coke! plate after plate of rice and bucket loads of coke! Very very sad.
