390,000 Jedi In The Uk?!

Featured Replies

I am not sure what to say. I am a fan yes, but......

Well, anyway I am interested to see what they really believe and will be doing some research, I might be enlightened or just get a good laugh, not sure.

I did find this though The Jedi Religion Homepage?

That is kind of what I am seeing. They might not be aware of how much of what they believe is rooted in Buddhism and to some extent Taoism, but their opinions are filled with such ideas. It's interesting, some take it seriously yet they keep the movie and their belief as separate. One person even said in the forum that they really didn't want to use the movies to help prove a point, but it worked that time. I just wonder where all this is going. Are they going to teach there kids this? What happens when Lucus dies, will this make these guys more serious? What does Lucus have to say about all this?

Strange, but that is what makes the world fun, eh?

Well, look at how many scientologists emerged from L Ron Hubbard's scifi, and that wasn't even good scifi.

Also, take a look at Bodhidharma and tell me that isn't Yoda.

if the jedi are only 'fighting' the the so called 'dark side' of their mind then maybe (bit of a stretch). But there is no stress of good/evil in buddhism, its more like "awake/enlightened" or "asleep". Buddhism is also non-violent.

its probably closer to taoism, the "force" equating with the "chi", which is used in martial arts, sexual energy, natures rythms, basically everything if your sensitive to it .

as for 390000 Jedi in the UK, there was a chain email going the rounds in australia a few years back asking everyone to claim on the census form they belong to the jedi religion (for fun of course). Since a lot of people find religion a joke they probably participated in the email joke for fun, hence inflating the stats.

:o Is that why Lucus made him so short?

Scientologists, yes. Look how well they turned out. Is that because the scifi that created it sucked? Will this mean that Jedism will work better with modern society, because hey, it's Star Wars?

I guess I am curious how someone can make something like this work in day to day life. I am also curious to see if it gets as far as Scientology, which is now being called a religion and many have forgotten it's creator. I now it's success is due to the kind of people that have joining the church, and I see that most people who claim The Force are just common folks, so will that mean it will take the loner to be accpected or4 less time?

It's like watching some social experiment. :D

Sure, but their are still enough practicing to make a notice. Check the link I gave there. Could it become a stronger religion within society or fade away? As Cdnvic noted Scientology didn't.

Are there any Thai Jedis? I would think Jedism would appeal to Asians, for it has these close ties philosophical.

Grover there's a good short piece that talks about the links between Jedis and Buddhism, Taoism, and Zoroastrianism. The author ties the four together quite nicely.

yeh nice read.

there is a lot of truths in the "jedi" way, although a bunch of modern jedis training with lightsabers sounds a bit dicky. :o

anyway good on em whatever makes them happy.

It seems that the peope who really believe the philosophy has merit stay away from the robes and glow rods.

That Jedi mind trick could have useful applications......

Thai Immigration Policeman: Can I see your work permit?

English Teacher (waving his fingers about): You don't need to see my work visa, I can go about my business.

If being a Jedi meant you could gain such powers, I would SO be a Jedi!

390,000 Jedi in the UK ....... I'm one of them :o

The email that Grover mentions did the rounds in the UK just before the last Census. A document that had to be completed in full and with total honesty, failure to do so could mean a spell in jail........ apart from one question, you could avoid it or lie without fear of punishment, obviously the "what religion are you?" question.

I, and many people I know put down Jedi, for possibly a multitude of different reasons.

Haven't given it a single thought since.

Yep I'm one as well, and all my friends.

We also put Jedi on the Census, as apparently if more than x number of people put that down then it had to be officially recognised as a religion by the government. I have too never given it a thought since.

The numbers may not be totally accurate, but rather are an estimation based on the actual number of responses.

For example, ever wonder why seemingly small special interest groups seem to garner more attention than their numbers should warrant ? Every time a politician receives a letter on a certain subject (i.e. abortion/anti-abortion, gun control, environment, ect), they consider that letter (opinion) to be representative of 10 or more people, 9 of which couldn't be bothered with writing.

So, the actual number of responses on that census could have been 39,000, but the government (census bureau) may have decided that there were 10 times as many people who felt the same, but didn't actually mark it down, or ticked off "other" instead.

As for the "religion" itself. Well. Scientology has already been mentioned. Pretty amazing the number of people that actually believe there's a spaceship hiding behind Venus waiting to pick up the "faithful". Given time, the Jedi "religion" could start seriously cutting into the profits of the other, more mainstream religions.

Another example would be Sikhism (spelling ?). It is only about 300 years old, but has followers (mostly migrants) in many parts of the world. 1,400 years ago, there was no Islam/Allah/Muslims. I read recently that some people in Greece are trying to revive worship of the ancient Greek gods.

Where will the Jedi "religion" be in another 100 years ? Who will be the first "Jedi" disciple to be elected ?

What a wild future tomorrow will be. :o

:D I find that interesting enough to be entertained by it. You should have asked some hard hitting questions about the implications of introducing Klingon philosogy into modern politics. :D
