A 15-year-old girl was arrested in Nakhon Ratchasima’s Chumpuang district on Thursday, a day after her newly-born baby boy survived being buried alive in a field.

A villager found the baby in a cassava plantation about one kilometre from Ban Nong Kham village in Tambon Thalad on Wednesday. The infant was taken to the village before he was sent to the district hospital.

Usa Nisaikha, 41, said he was herding cows in a field near the plantation when he heard a dog barking and a baby crying.

He said he ran to the spot and found the dog clawing at the ground and noticed a baby’s leg sticking up from the ground. He said he dug the baby out of the ground and carried him to the village.

Police conducted an investigation and learned that a 15-year-old girl living near the spot had bought an unusual amount of sanitary napkins.

When police questioned the girl she admitted she gave birth to the boy and buried him for fear that her father would find out and punish her.

On Thursday, Nakhon Ratchasima governor Wichian Chantharanothai and Trairat Witthayanumart, the chief of the Chumpuang district, visited the baby at Chumpuang Hospital.

Trairat said the baby is healthy.

Trairat added that the girl's parents have sought permission to take care of the baby after he is released from hospital.

well put her in handcuffs and lets have a re-enactment

This young girl very obviously needs support

Shame on media that think this is a story that anyone needs to see

How about quietly giving this young girl some help

shameful

agree she needs help

also was a heinous thing to do

also certainly newsworthy.  maybe it will dissuade another girl from doing the same thing after reading this story.

one would think maternal instinct is stronger than postpartum mental disturbance

Plenty of newborns are just left at the hospital, or at police station as reported recently. Where are all the pro life types? Why aren't they establishing infrastructure to support these young mothers who are just not capable of raising a child?

USA is heavy into anti-abortion... because of how the US Supreme Court is stacked (in favor of republicans, but not necessarily of pro-lifers). Trump could pass away tomorrow due to a heart attack, and the USSC will still remain intact. Of course, you probably don't know/understand this, and that is okay. I know that you love Trump.

As much as I agree with the view the girl needs professional help, at the same time I feel the increasing mentality of: "If I don't want it, I dump it" is getting scary. Assuming she was pregnant for more than 3 days, I wonder why her "parents" who now apply for permission to raise another kid, did not support her.

Yes but not her rapist.

I think that might be part of the investigation... when thing have cooled down a bit they will question her as to who the father is.

Seems odd that the parents have asked to take care of the baby upon release from the hospital yet the reason for hew actions was that she feared her father?

At 15, she is underage and still a child in many respects. She may not even have consented to intercourse, and there is no mention of who the father is. Thai parents don't appear to educate or discuss sex matters with their children, let alone what can happen as a result of sex. So how is the girl supposed to know?

It is unbelievably sad that she had no-one to turn to. She appears to have secretly carried the pregnancy all that time, unbeknown to anyone maybe, but certainly not her parents who should be the very people to guide her.

Very, very sad.

To terrible to contemplate, what a relief that the baby survived. I can imagine that the girl must feel a great guilt and her parents need to think about their relationship to their daughter, children should be able to trust their parents above all.

Maybe she didn't have any choice about the sexual experience at all.  At her age and younger many girls are forced into doing things they don't want to do.  Add to that uncaring or violent parents and the girl will have little choice but to try to hide her predicament.  Happens almost daily in Thailand.

I have nothing but sympathy for the girl. Just hope she gets the help she obviously needs.

Why do you suggest that this a trait peculiar to Thai parents?   My generation in the west generally didn't do that either, my parents in particular never went anywhere near that subject, thank god, and most of us knew what was what regarding sex and the consequences.
