DUBAI (Reuters) - The United States conveyed a message to Iran warning of a limited strike against the country after its unmanned drone was shot down in the Gulf, Iran's civil defence agency chief was quoted as saying by the Fars news agency on Sunday.

"After the downing of its intruding drone, the United States told us through diplomatic intermediaries that it wanted to carry out a limited operation," said Gholamreza Jalali, who is also a senior commander of Iran's elite Revolutionary Guards.

"But Iran's response was that we regard every operation as the beginning of a war."

A day after the drone was downed in the Gulf, Iranian officials told Reuters on June 21 that Tehran had received a message from U.S. President Donald Trump through Oman after the drone was downed, warning that a U.S. attack on Iran was imminent. Iranian and U.S. officials denied the report.

Trump later said he had approved retaliatory military strikes against Iran, but called them off at the last minute.

The shooting of the drone came after weeks of rising tension following a spate of attacks on oil tankers in the Gulf region. Tehran said the drone had violated its airspace. Washington denied this.

Try flying military drones in international waters off the coast of the US mainland and see what happens. Hypocrites.

Ahhh that kind of stuff goes on all the time lol with full sized ships lol and if they did send a warning I’m glad they were concerned about loss of life

Whenever Iran speaks...the world listens...then convenes a meeting to determine what they really meant to say...

Historically, Iran has made a living off of lying profusely...the people are very generous...the government (Muslim cleric) is still attempting to live in a feudal society...

No doubt the warning was something like " In retaliation for downing our drone over Iranian territory we will bombard you with 1000's of Donald Trumps insulting and childish tweets"  - See how you like that Iran ????????

It actually sounds like striving to react without things getting out of hand. Pretty much the same as with the missile attacks on Syria. I'd say that leaving lines of communications open (to some extent, at least) is not a bad thing.

Russians fly such missions on a routine basis, and have a more or less constant surveillance presence off USA coast as well. I don't think interceptions are a thing with that.

Doubt your "historically" comment is based on anything much.

Hostility to Iran is the Trump/Netanyahu glue that binds a fictional emerging coalition between Israel, Saudi Arabia and the smaller Gulf States together ( like that is ever possible- existing only in Trumpworld). So bashing Tehran has been a prominent theme for Trump both in Saudi Arabia and Israel.

Fortunately much of Trump's world view is now coming into a jarring contact with reality.

While the Global Hawk drone is capable to operate autonomously and "untethered," the autonomous navigation can be switched off and the drone remote controlled via the satellite link by pilots on the ground who are supplied with the same instrument data and who carry the same responsibilities as pilots in crewed planes.

There is no mention that this drone was flying autonomously. Given the potential for Iranian land to air threats and the general hostile rhetoric of the U.S., it would seem irresponsible to not have the drone piloted remotely (there were only three such drones in U.S. inventory). Of course if the drone was being remotely piloted, there is the potential for pilot error or directive to "press" Iranian air space with perhaps the expectation that Iran didn't have the capability to shoot the drone down. Also the potential for unpredictable wind currents at high altitude that could unexpectedly alter the drone flight path.

Some twitter conversations regarding the drone path starting with US Central Command.
