Acosta and Trump are not friends. When Trump's nominee for Commerce Secretary withdrew, the White House Counsel suggested Acosta as an alternative. That is how he got the job. And Acosta himself testified to Congress that higher ups in the Justice Department (and remember, this was the Obama Justice Department with Robert Mueller as head of the FBI) pressured him to offer the deal. Conservatives have been trying to get the Epstein case reopened for years.

It was in the Miami Herald Expose entitled "Perversion of Justice" , which is the definitive piece on the narrow question of Epstein's original evasion of Justice to date. Very long and multiple articles in the series but a must read nonetheless.
