A seventh defendant in the murder almost exactly two years ago of a family of eight in southern Krabi province was sentenced to death on Tuesday, while the same sentence was upheld for the mastermind behind the crime and for five accomplices.

The Region 5 Appeals Court in Krabi also upheld the 12-month prison sentence imposed on Chalita Sangchote, wife of the convicted ringleader, Surifath “Bang Fath” Bannopwongsakul.

The court further ordered the seven men sentenced to death to jointly pay Bt5 million in compensation to the victims’ relatives, who were co-plaintiffs in the suit brought against them.

Tawatchai Boonkong, 38, the seventh defendant condemned to death, had been sentenced in the lower court to 13 months in jail. Both he and Chalita, 42, had completed their sentences by the time of the appeal hearing.

The lower court last year heard the facts of the July 10, 2017, murders of Ban Khao Ngam village headman Worayuth Sunglung and seven of his family members at their home in Khao Leuk district.

In March 2018, Surifath, 43, Komsan Wiangnon, 42, Prajak Boontoy, 37, Abdulloh Doloh, 31, Arun Thongkham, 30, and Thanachai Jamnong, 42, were sentenced to death and remain incarcerated at Nakhon Si Thammarat Prison.

Surifath was convicted of ordering Worayuth and his family killed over a land-ownership dispute. Worayuth gave title deeds to Surifath as collateral for a loan and eventually repaid the debt, but Surifath refused to return the deeds.

Obviously they were not well connected.

Connected by the very fine edge of the knife...

Beheading would be appropriate!!

Talk about getting blood out of a stone!

- I can see the perps saying "what are you going to do if we don't pay? Kill me?

After slaughtering 8 family members it's a bit hard to brush it under the carpet !!

Well connected but once media picks up on it then its  game over  plus i don't  know why people who are sentenced to death shall pay 5 million compensation whats in it for defendants.

Is there any responsiblity for putting his family  in danger  by withholding  the land deeds?

Seems like it was totally justified to do this unless  there was more to it than what i read.

Shame the family paid for the fathers  behaviour. Pretty sick really.

Then again  makes me wonder about my own  behaviour  and it is not just me putting myself at risk if i do something  wrong but my family  too.

Problem is as much as i disagree with what happened in  most murders the number  rule is to leave  no witnesses

Cant believe  with the anount of killers they couldnt have got hom outside.

Why wipe out  them all???

Shame sad very sad story

No one win everyone  lose

perhaps the court will seize 5 million in assets from those convicted as a death sentence is not stellar incentive to give 5 million
