No monkey business allowed in Korat village

Wildlife officials captured a male monkey Thursday, four days after it ransacked homes in a village in Nakhon Ratchasima’s None Sung district and terrified the local residents. 

 

Phannarai Wongwattanakit, a veterinarian from Wildlife Conservation Division of the Nakhon Ratchasima-based 7th Conservation Area Management Office of the National Parks, Wildlife and Plant Conservation Department, managed to fire a tranquilizer dart at the monkey at 3pm while it was perched in a tree near a house.

 

Residents of Ban Nong Tako village in Tambon Makha sought help from the tambon administrative organisation after the monkey strayed into their village and ransacked their houses in search of food.

 

It was not afraid of villagers and threatened to attack anyone who tried to shoo it away, prompting the villagers to set up a team of volunteers to stand guard.

 

The tambon administration sought help from the parks conservation area office that sent a team of officials headed by Phannarai to capture the rogue monkey.

 

The tranquiliser worked quickly and the monkey fell into a net prepared by officials.

 

Phannarai said the monkey was slightly injured. It was taken to her headquarters for rehabilitation and would later be released in the Khao Khiew National Forest Reserve.
