Ammonia-leak area of Phuket ice factory shut down by order

PHUKET: The ice and water factory in Rawai that caused an ammonia leak early last Friday morning, forcing local residents to evacuate their homes, has been ordered to shut down the area in the factory that caused the leak until repairs are made to ensure that another dangerous gas leak does not occur.

 

The Happy Crystal ice and water-making plant located behind Rawai Temple (Wat Sawang Arom) suffered the gas leak at 2am last Friday (July 5).

 

Rescue workers, civil defence volunteers, firefighters and officials from Phuket Provincial Defence Office were called to the scene and advised local residents to keep away from the area.

I take it the ammonia gas is used as a refrigerant not to be made into ice cubes for unhappy crystal ice customers????

Ammonia gas is not very flammable.

No doubt the local population were clear-headed.

Had to be ordered to shut down...typical Thai safety otherwise.

leak at an ice rink in Canada last year killed 3 people, if not proactive with safety the gas can be fatal quickly.. 

Maintainance free Thailand.....wash rinse spin repeat

I'm sure it was an oversight by the factory manager !

Ammonia is one of the safest commercial refrigerants principally because of the smell leading to immediate recognition of a leak. 

The leaking in enclosed spaces if large enough can rapidly become fatal.
