Two more dugongs found dead in the sea on Sunday

Two adult dugongs were found dead in the Andaman Sea on Sunday, bringing the total number of deaths in the last 3 months to five, excluding Mariam and Yamil.

 

The death of one dugong was reported on Sunday morning to Mr. Worapote Lomlim, chief of the Nopparatthara-Phi Phi Islands national park, by fishermen who found the dead mammal floating in the sea between Poo and Phi Phi islands. Another dead dugong was found in the sea in Trang province.

 

The fishermen reported that the dead dugong was so big that their boat was not powerful enough to tow it and asked park officials to send a larger vessel to tow the dugong to Mai Pai Island, which is about 20 km away.

Thats what happens when you drink the sea water. Dugongs are fragile animals that need perfect conditions for survival. I am sure that the seagrass that they eat is in short supply too.

I wonder if autopsies will be carried out on them to determine the cause of death?

I wonder if the amount of microplastic particles are part of the cause?

 

fishermen will never do the right thing where wildlife is concerned when there are profits to be made, money always comes first. They have raped the thai seas for years by not following the laws/regulations, wont change now, the govt needs to shut down fishing an any of the dugong feeding areas, its the only way they will stop it although the fishermen will still fish in the closed waters as they do in marine parks now

Dugongs graze on sea grasses and aquatic plants that grow in abundance in the tropical shallows.

Unless you meant to say that netting was destroying the grasses I don't understand your post.

Becoming weekly bad news here. Sad. Dugong are a species at HIGH risk. Listed a "vulnerable", "threatened" and "declining". ????
