It is much easier to manipulate a currency down than up. 

 

The Swiss are keeping their currency down simply by creating as much money as needed... this doesn't cost anything. 

 

On the other hand, pushing a currency up implies spending the country's reserves in foreign currencies, which are not unlimited. 

 

It is very unlikely that Thailand is doing this, especially for so long... these kinds of manipulations (up) are generally short term, certainly not sustained over many years...

Just maybe the cloud seeding is part of the problem. Messing with mother nature is rarely good especially when the overall environmental impacts are not well known.

The problem here in Isaan is the soil.  It is of very poor quality and not much else will grow in it.  The farmers here are not lazy, they work their asses off out in the hot sun and the reason most grow rice is to feed their family throughout the year.  My wife's father has farmland in Wang Saphung and he is very worried about the lack of rain right now.

When they dug the paddyfields, decades ago, most of the good soil was probably taken away by those who knew better. 

 

What is left is a kind of flour like soil in which nothing but grass will grow.

Bad soil or not they can make the soil better with the help of a soil test they know what to add to the soil same as Most people Do ..now stop making Excuses for the farmers . I worked on farms and cattle stations some of that soil was very bad but we ripped it with bull dozers  plowed it cultivated it put The right fertilizer on it and planted  with peanuts ,sorghum, corn,beans the biggest paddock we planted was 2700 acres with sorghum the others were smaller down to 20 acres.  The end

But that costs money that most of the small farmers don't have

Or they pushed the topsoil to the side to make the bunds for the paddies which has the same result.What is worse is they are still doing it!<deleted>.

Don't forget that anything alternatively that they might grow, there needs to be a market for it here which has at least some potential for profit.  And can these alternate crops survive the weather here?  A lot of crops cannot take too much water or they will drown and the roots will rot.  A lot cannot survive the heat and the blazing sun.  It costs money to change your farmland for another type of crop and it is a gamble, expensive and risky.
