Be a good Buddhist, His Holiness tells Prayut

Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha has received a blessing and advice from His Holiness the Supreme Patriarch of Thailand when he offered candles ahead of the Buddhist Lent, which begins on July 31.

Prayut, his wife, prime ministerial adviser and director of National Office of Buddhism, together gave an offering dedicated to His Holiness the Supreme Patriarch of Thailand at Wat Ratchabophit, Bangkok.

The PM informed his Holiness that he would be taking his new Cabinet to appear before his Majesty the King on 16 July so they could swear an oath of allegiance, after which the new government would announce its policy plans over the next week.

They needed to hurry, said Prayut, in order to help citizens in need but he believed international organisations and others countries in the region understood the pressure on his previous government and would support Thailand in future.

His Holiness advised the PM to conduct his work morally and wisely in accordance with Buddhist principles.

Nice to see the political leadership pay respect at the temple as most Thais do.

Surely not by the same Buddhist principles used by Abbot Phra Dhammajayo from the Dhammakaya temple.

Abbot Phra Dhammajayo may not have been such a moral person but he was certainly wise in the way he made his escape to Germany with millions of dollars of embezzled money and never been seen since.

What is good Buddhist ? IS it same as good catholic girl?????

Yeah do what you want,  then seek forgiveness.

You are always forgiven, regardless of your sins. Buddhists and Catholics.

A bit late... but making merit after the event seems to be the Thai way.

Ive been interested in Buddhism for several years, did read so many books about Buddhism, history, tibet, zen, hinduism etc..

Buddhism in Thailand is really just a farce isnt it?

I only see thais going to the temple if they want something (lottery now, or more money in the future). Monks go to the temple ..and get the deluxe treatment by their own family with fancy food, MK etc if they can afford it.

Maybe im looking at it wrong?

And i went with thais to Vietnam & Malaysia there seems to be no respect for bhuddism in those countries? Here the same people bow before a spirit house and over there nothing?

Malaysia is mostly Muslim and Vietnam is a communist country and being overly religious is frowned upon,.  Jus saying.

To be a good Buddhist, the first lesson Prayut should learn is the Buddha's teaching from the Kalama Sutta: NOT to blindly follow Tradition, and not blindly to believe what your teachers [i.e. Authority figures] tell you. Prayut should start preaching this to all the nation - and encouraging the Thais to question everything (as the Buddha encouraged his people to do).

That doctrine alone of not going by old traditions and customs - if put into practice - would revolutionise Thailand from top to bottom. It truly would be an earthquake in the cultural and body politic of Thailand.

So of course - it will never be implemented or seriously preached now or in the future.

And as for the teaching on not slavishly following Authority figures - well ...!!

Talk about a massive, cosmic mismatch between what the Buddha actually taught and what Thailand by contrast DOES!

As I have said many times, Thai Buddhism is a perversion of the Buddhist religion.....there is little if any similarity between the two, money/greed is the root of this evil perversion.
