Because the economy in China is tanking. Even the cheapest of Chinese can't do Thailand on the cheap

No. No it isn't. It's chugging along quite nicely thanks. Plenty of cashed up Chinese still on tour.

Much to the envy of quite a lot of countries, one of which is demanding a free slice of their pie.

If you lay out 50,000 baht on a plane ticket from Europe + hotel charges + entertainment and you can't go out for a decent meal and/or a drink for two of your allotted nights, you'll remember this tremendous waste of money for a long time. And then tell all your friends.

Maybe that would be a forgettable holiday then?

In many other countries there is no  ban on alcohol sales for Christmas and Easter so Pubs, bars, discos, hotels and restaurants  can and do continue business as usual..there is also no silly  time of day restrictions on sale of alcohol.

Well I think there is, certainly in UK, and a particular one is the USA. You never can be sure what the rules may be and when and where you can get a beer. Cross a county line and it all changes, never mind State line.

Ok some places have restricted hours due to their alcohol licence...which the local authority issue

https://www.24houralcohol.co.uk/supermarket-booze-sales-times

they aren't forced stop selling at 2PM till 5PM and

Midnight till 11 AM every day,  and completely stop sales on "Religious days"  and "election days"

As you can in Thailand, just not all bars on special days.

Not legally.

Yes, as if that was a point.

But you can drink in any UK bar any day of the week LEGALLY, there are also 24 hour licencing laws all over the country as well as night clubs, casinos etc. The only day you can't buy alcohol in large supermarkets is Easter Sunday but all the pubs can sell alcohol on that day.

I was commenting on the 'time of day' claim by that poster. Learn to read.

I can read very clearly thank you, I was commenting on his first sentence, perhaps you should enunciate what part you were commenting on, google is your friend for the definition of enunciate!

The word crash is being bandied about too freely and the likelihood of a total crash in Pattaya or anywhere else in Thailand is indeed most unlikely. But anyone suggesting that there isn't currently a serious downturn is utterly deluded. Is it a long term thing or will everything recover on it's own? Only time will tell.

I would also add to that that the current situation will not be attributed to one factor, or even just the ones mentioned in this thread, there are many many reasons why people of all nationalities have changed their behaviour towards Thailand and it will ultimately be down to a combination of all of them.

What percent is serious?   A recession is two consecutive quarters of negative economic growth as measured by a country's gross domestic product (GDP).

It has been said but prices are going up due to the lack of customers. They now need to make a month's salary from one customer. I don't think that many bar girls have a degree in economics.

Cannot say for the degree in economics, but some definately could claim a diploma in english fluency....far better then my google-iPhone Thai !

Got to love Thailand shutting down the booze places, good thing there are the Thai mom

and pop places that sell beer anytime.  555.  What a country, good thing it is tropical.

or the tourism would only be in Winter months.

Geezer

Legally, what has that got to do with real life in Thailand? If I want to find a place to have a drink in Thailand, I can find one. As to the UK, that is not the case. Many pubs close in the afternoons, there is no business. When there were controlled hours, they were open. It is of course very silly of places like Pattaya etc to have these alcohol free days, closing pretty much all nighttime venues. But they have decided  major religious days and voting days will be no alcohol (despite the fact that tourists do not vote). Outside of that, beer bars are open from 10am to 3am, some 24hour. Not so in the UK. And supermarkets are irrelevant, if I want to buy alcohol, I do it the day before a holiday, my fridge in Thailand is loaded every holiday.

And I wasn't, hence I quoted the whole post, which wasn't yours by the way. You were just looking to cause friction and butt in.

I'm in Norway and just paid 500 baht for a beer. The food is good but who wants to eat out when a normal dish is minimum 400 baht +++ . So I miss Pattaya already.

Not really on the main topic. Just came back from a week at the koh chang paradise resort, on koh chang, and it was very nice. Got crowded last friday thru sunday, but rest of the week was moderate.

Beach was fantastic, restaurants were busy but not full, locals friendly. All in all nice week away. Most visitors seemed to be from Scandinavian countries and other places from around Asia, Japan, South Korean...all very pleasant. Dined with several groups of Europeans all stating they would certainly come back to Thailand.

A little snap shot I know, but from the small sample i talked with most would return.

Sukhumvit was jock a block ,so some people were driving here yesterday afternoon .gave up trying to get to Makro n pattaya ,so went down railway rd to the one in s pattaya .

Spot on. However, Pattaya is no longer for the Farang. It is now for the Thais. How they will manage that without our money is beyond me, but as you said... every time I go there I get stuck in traffic. So, there must be some people still going there!
