LONDON (Reuters) - Prime Minister Boris Johnson pledged on Friday to fund a new rail route across the Pennines between Manchester and Leeds to boost growth in northern England.

Speaking in Manchester, he said one of his top domestic priorities will be to level out opportunities and unlock potential in England's regions.

"I want to be the PM who does with Northern Powerhouse Rail what we did with Crossrail in London," he was due to say, "and today I am going to deliver on my commitment to that vision with a pledge to fund the Leeds to Manchester route."

In extracts of his speech provided by his office, he said the government and local people would have to consult on an exact proposal for the route.

"I have tasked officials to accelerate their work on these plans so that we are ready to do a deal in the autumn," he added.

The route would be the first step in the so-called Northern Powerhouse Rail and would be considered in detail after a government review into the cost of the High-Speed 2 project which will connect London, the Midlands and northern England using trains capable of travelling at 250 mph.

The first segment of the HS2 project between London and Birmingham is due to open at the end of 2026, with the second phase to Leeds and Manchester expected to be completed by 2032-33.

London's Crossrail, Europe's biggest infrastructure project, which has been beset by cost overruns and timetable delays, will connect Reading, to the west of the capital, with Shenfield, to the east.

He must have one hell of a money tree all of a sudden.

Anything to do with an imminent election?

i am sure by Friday morning he will see the writing on the wall and have a (Trump style) change of mind...

The previous government supported the project in principle but had not committed to investing in it.

Price tag about £39bn.

In 2018, a £70bn master plan announced by Transport for the North - set up to co-ordinate transport across the north of England - included HS3 in its plans for a new rail network, called Northern Powerhouse Rail.

Nothing In Lincolnshire the second biggest County in England,  Only 1 Motorway from one the biggest and busiest ports in Europe,  Nothing going south, 90% of goods go by road, You would think they would concentrate on the Infrastructure that serves the Country best

Great news well done. No doubt the doomsday preppers will do everything they can to remain negative and do there very best to break everything and anything that the PM does.

You are confusing what Johnson says with what Johnson does.

A man schooled in the Classical Latin texts doling out easy promises to the masses seems to have forgotten the Gracchi.

Rather than spend a fortune on HS2 which will get business people there 30 minutes earlier, how about improving rural transport? Where i used to live, in Hampshire, services were slashed 9 years ago, my town has NO public transport on sundays and NO public transport after 7 p.m. Then they say people should use public transport more ... you have to have a car if you want a life in rural areas.

Im my past life (30 years within the Northwest rail industry) I attended a meeting in Manchester back in 2010 with Network Rail and local Rail operating companies, main part of that was improving rail links (journey times) between Leeds - Manchester - Liverpool, this is before terms like Northern Powerhouse or HS2/3 were being banded about then it was The Northern Hub. The budget was £500M later raised  to +£560M using Manchester as a HUB. This project was planned to be completed by 2023 (at time of the meeting) parts of it have been completed (eg Manchester Chord along with some track and infrastructure upgrades) allowing faster links via Man Picc (a bottle neck station)

After the coalition Govt lost the election and with Brexit shenanigans this project has lost its drive from Central Govt, so with Bojo raising the issue again back into the limelight it has to be a good thing for the whole of the north of UK. A lot of the money is already here and there. The BCR (benefit to cost ratio) at £4 for every £1 invested is double that of London's Cross Rail project or HS2 so is a no brainer really

Afraid I never attended any meetings which may help Lincoln though.., nearest I ever got to there was the Royal Thai Consulate at Hessel lol...

Hmm, maybe wait until he actually does something before claiming people are trying to “break everything and anything”.

So far it’s been all talk talk.
