Weatherman warns of tropical depression approaching Thailand

TMD.jpg

The Thai Meteorological Department (TMD) issued a warning this morning (July 30th) to alert the public of possible impacts from a tropical storm, which is expected to reach Vietnam on August 1st or 2nd.

The TMD reported that the tropical depression, over the upper South China Sea, is yielding winds with a sustained speed of about 50 knots. The storm is currently almost stationary but the met office will advise as it develops.

The storm is expected to move through Hai Nan, China and make landfall over upper Vietnam, when more rain will be likely with torrential downpours over the country affecting the Northeast and the North at first.

Been raining all night here in Udon; temperature is 24°C

Exactly the same in Chiang Mai. Although it does seem the rain is tapering off a little as the morning arrives. So much for my morning walk today

Unfortunately not enough to fill dams or underground reservoirs.

If you track it here it looks like it is heading north west into southern China.. there could be some rain in the north and north east but welcome I think...

That's an excellent weather site map, and your right ... its definitely heading more north than south, once she hits the land she will slow down and die (usually), so I don't see Thailand copping a lot out of this one, unless the storm turns its tail !

It's one night of rain.

However in the last week we have had more rainstorms come in and that is a positive. If this tropical depression can bring more, we'll be well on are way to alleviating some of the worst hit drought areas in province.

The last few days here, just outside Pattaya, have been hot enough to boil a monkey's bum. Got the sprinkler working overtime. Hope we get a few drops.

In Sisaket (Khukhan) we have had rain showers for the last week. One or two heavy falls but mostly overnight showers. Not complaining as our rice was suffering but we need much more.

Great weather maps, thanks for posting them.

Always seems to back off when the sun comes up and warms the area. But it did rain all night which is good for CM.

Sheesh. Read ThaiVisa often enough and you can experience Tropical Depression everyday !

Considering how little rain we've received and it's now 2 months into the "rainy season" it's going to have to pour a lot to make up for it or we'll be even worse off when the "rainy season" comes to an end in the Fall.
(FYI - "Rainy Season" officially started on 20 May this year.)

Same in Nonkhun district, a lot of rain, but more of the kind one would expect in London or Paris, not the heavy tropical rain able to fill up the rice paddies in a few hours.

This kind of thin rain evaporates as fast as it hits the ground...

As for the depression, we will get some of the tail end of it, but not a direct hit, which very rarely happens with depressions in the South China Sea (which despite its name belongs to the US, by the way...).
