50 Thai fishermen stranded on fishing vessels in Somalian sea appeal for help

About 50 Thai fishermen, stranded on board two fishing vessels in the sea of Somalia with their water, food and fuel running low, are appealing for help to get them back to Thailand.

 

In a video call from one of the fisherman, whose home is in Thailand’s northeastern province of Buri Ram and is aboard one of the two fishing boats, made to his friends working in Phuket, he reportedly said that there are 18 of them, who hail from the Lahan Sai district of Buri Ram and were lured to work as fishermen in Somalia by an employer whose name was not disclosed.

 

The fisherman said that they had not been paid for about five months and 50 Thais, and ten others of different nationalities, were stranded on the vessels floating in the sea of Somalia without fuel and are running short of food and water. He said they are desperate for help from any state agency.

The Sea of Somalia".   Perhaps they really mean the Gulf of Aden? According to the map, they are on the north coast of Somalia near the town of Bosaso, which has a fishing harbour. Why haven't they put in there for supplies or are they illegally fishing in Somali waters? Thai fishermen wouldn't do that I suppose.

 

Probably a Chinese vessel fishing illegally and unfortunately for them they've been caught by modern day pirates. Speculation, of course.

Probably a Thai boat with name change....there are many operating on the east coast...AIS is always disabled.

With some luck they will get kidnapped and fed by some Somali pirate.

It did say they had run out of fuel. Not easy to put into anywhere without fuel.

"...their water, food and fuel running low, ...". Only semantics and bad seamanship.

They were also over 3000 NM from their home port, far across the Indian Ocean.

this is why many somalians find it more lucrative to become pirates as their waters have been depleted of fish

Wonder what work they are doing there as expats. Surely they have their work permits in order.
