Prime Minister General Prayut Chan-o-cha said on Wednesday (August 7) that kratom leaves could be legalised in the future if they were proved to be useful.

Experts and academics have called on the government to legalise the use of kratom leaves (Mitragyna speciosa), saying some foreign companies have started patenting chemicals extracted from the leaves for medical use.

While visiting the Yala Government Complex, Prayut was asked whether it would be possible for his government to legalise kratom leaves.

Prayut replied that his government could not go that far for now because even the legalising of marijuana for medical use had encountered a lot of obstacles.

“One at a time, please. If it is useful, we’ll make it legal,” Prayut said.

The PM said he could not say for now whether he would support the use of kratom leaves for medical treatment because it must be legalised first.

No idea if it's useful. Can I have a free taster?

Don't bother, you'll get a better 'high' from normal cigarettes

From what I know it was used to come off heroine. It is cheaper and safer than heroine. When Thailand was taxing the opium trade they criminalised kratom because they were losing revenue. Ironically the plant is only native to Thailand and nearly impossible to eradicate. For this reason only planting new tree and harvesting the leaves was banned. Existing tree are legs. My story might not be correct but probably close to it.

In fact, it's the opposite. MC taxis in the south use it to keep them self awake, doesn't work though.

It depends on the variety. Some are stimulating, some calm down and some do both.

Well, the stuff they used  a bit south from Nahkon Si, did neither.  LOL.

Although nobody has had a chance to do thorough research as yet, I believe they will find some benefits. In large doses it can act as a sedative, smaller doses a stimulant. When I lived down south my father in law had a tree and from what I observed, it's effects are very benign. It caught a bad rap when kids would make a tea and put all kinds of crap in an attempt to strengthen it with some actually poisoning themselves. There are a lot more destructive substances in Thailand being used than tom imo,

Most Thais chew Kratom leaf to pep themselves up and give themselves energy, same idea as caffein. A side effect is to darken the skin, particularly on the face, which is why women never use it.

I'm sure it is as beneficial as tea, alcohol, nicotine, and coffee. Not as good as sunglasses or sunscreen but not all that harmful either.

Thanks for the info. I watched the film.

It seems that big pharma are trying to get in on the act to protect themselves and the addictive opioids they are selling now, whereas - according to kratom users - it is not addictive and acts purely as a relaxant.

No clear answer, but worth watching. Available on tpb.
