SYDNEY (Reuters) - A man went on a stabbing rampage in downtown Sydney on Tuesday, killing one woman and wounding another before he was restrained by members of the public, police said, adding they were not treating it as a terrorist incident.

The 21-year-old man, who police did not name, was carrying a knife and a computer thumb drive containing information about deadly attacks in North America and New Zealand, police said.

But he did not appear to be acting for any terrorist groups and the attack was not being treated as terrorism, police added.

“At the end of the day, it’s a horrendous crime and he should pay for that,” New South Wales state police commissioner Mick Fuller told reporters.

A 21-year-old woman was found dead in an apartment building and a second woman, 41, was taken to hospital with a stab wound to her back. She was in stable condition, police said.

They did not say how the first woman died but said the man was responsible for both attacks. There was no apparent link between the two women.

Police were investigating a home about 32 km (20 miles) west of the city where the young man lived with his parents.

The man was in custody and expected to be charged with homicide, assault and, depending on the outcome of the investigation, potential terrorism offences, Fuller said.

The incident brought downtown traffic to a halt in Australia’s biggest city. Video images on Twitter showed a young man running across an intersection and jumping onto a car hood, yelling and waving what appeared to be a long-bladed knife.

The man fell to the ground when the car moved and he was confronted by a person holding a chair, the video showed. It was unclear what the man was shouting.

Other footage showed the man pinned to the ground by several people holding two chairs and a milk crate on top of him.

Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison praised those who stopped the assailant.

“The attacker is now in police custody following the brave actions of those who were present at the scene and were able to ... restrain him,” he said.

A woman who answered the telephone at a Subway sandwich shop near the scene told Reuters, “We saw the person with a knife over there bleeding.

“The cops are here and they blocked the road right now, so we can’t go outside. They said, ‘It’s a crime scene, you can’t come out,’” said the woman, who declined to give her name.

State police minister David Elliott also praised the people who restrained the man.

This is how Sydneysiders respond,” he said. “If you want to behave in this sort of manner, if you want to put life and property at risk, it’s not just the police who will respond.”

It seems like the 'lone-wolf' attack situation is getting sort of out of control throughout the world. The culprits are almost always either ultra-nationalists/Aryanists etc.  or Islamists.  These two sickening groups are in a kind of race to outdo the other in terror they cause.

Many ultra-nationalist leaders/ideologues and many Islamist leaders/ideologues also have blood in their hands, in encouraging or turning a blind eye to such actual or potential terrorists. Will these leaders and ideologues ever be held accountable for all this ? Sadly very unlikely.

And, sadly, it seems as if these two groups of people will continue to kill and maim, for at least many more years ????

Its a bit over the top to put this in an extremist category. He killed one person in his condo. Goes out and wounds 1 person.

Hardly premeditated to kill anyone he could find.

1 person dead, 1 injured.

He had just escaped from a mental health facility. News reports are saying his lawyers will use the nutcase defence. Police may upgrade to terrorist charges after the guy gets out of hospital. Seems a few guys may have given him a bit of a touch up while restraining him.

Listening to Oz radio right now on the TuneIn radio app. Well worth downloading if you haven't got it. Also listen to 100.7 from the US from time to time. Not sure what US state it is from though.

Yet more evidence that Hopkins' claim "Police confirm #SydneyStabbing terrorist was a Muslim convert with terrorist ideologies" is completely wrong.

This time from the Sydney Morning Herald at 10pm Sydney time today (about three hours ago).

I think everyone has gotten off the beaten track, just by looking at the video, you can see the guy is short of a few quid up top.

Shouting Allah Akbah or whatever they shout, is merely a copycat statement from a sick individual who was under some kind of mental treatment, fact of the matter is the government doesn't put money into those institutes as they used to, like the old Callen Park in Rozelle, and these people are free  to walk the streets instead of being institutionalised, all it takes is one not to take their meds or some ICE, get hold of a knife or a gun and they become lethal.

So glad to see good old Ozzie's and the likes like the Irish, not cowering and bringing this guy to the ground, well done ozzie, ozzie, ozzie, oi oi oi, don't know what to chant to the Irish guys though, to be sure, to be sure ????

According to the bbc report, three guys from Manchester were instrumental in tackling him.

and former thai boxer help stop him kill more people.

I could have easily just looked out of the window and not done anything," Luke O'Shaughnessy, a former Thai boxer, told the BBC. "I thought we've got to run towards it."
