The fatal minivan crash that claimed the lives of eleven people this morning has resulted in a predictable response. 

 

The new transport minister has called for a crackdown on the vans to make sure they are up to standard.

 

Saksayam Chidchob - whose family run a racetrack in Buriram in Thailand's north east - confirmed that the van driver had a microsleep (lap nai) that led to the collision with a truck. 

 

No GPS was in operation contrary to the regulations but Sanook reported that Saksayam wanted more details. 

 

They said members of the public could call 1584 if they see sub-standard vans. 

 

Some 15,881 vans that are ten years old are due to be taken off the roads over the next ten years.

This is the man that last week decided to revoke the incoming law that passenger vans of over 10 years old should be withdrawn and replaced.

You can't tell that the brakes are failing unless you get under the van and get the wheel off.  Don't blame this on the public.   It is you the one in charge.  Vans should be check prior to each trip to include brakes, lights, turn signals, and tires.  Also a 6 month compete inspection by an outside company not involved with the van company.  Any graft should be treated in case of death as a life sentence to the inspector.  Corruption should be met with death to the driver, the owner of the company, the Transportation Minister and the PM

The driver survived to confirm this? It was not related to the number of hours the driver had to work to make a living?

In my few years here I've seen that all minivan drivers seem to drive like <deleted>, bar none. 

 

Even in city streets in Chiang mai you see them doing double the posted limit and passing on yellow lines, running red lights etc. Meaningful enforcement rather than virtue signalling would be a much better solution

By which time the last of these vehicles will be 20 years old.

I'm confused. Does that mean that the last of the 15000 vans will be 20 years old when it is taken off the road?

I am sure most of them will be knackered or will have crashed by then !

Simply the jerking knee syndrome at play. Nothing will happen, it never does.

Just a bit of posturing by the new Transport Minister Saksayam Chidchob who also happens to be the head honcho of the Bhumjaithai Party.

His qualifications for the job is that he sided with the Phalang Pracharat Party to vote for Prayut to become PM and was duly rewarded with this ministry.

Sad story no doubt. But its  no good. I could video 50 vans driving like suicide bombers on the run in 1 hrs time.

If they hire the necessary number of people to answer all the calls reporting sub-standard vans, that should result in a 100% employment rate for Thailand.
