BANGKOK - (NNT) The government’s sort-term economic stimulus "Chim Shop Chai - Eat Shop Spend" campaign, which offers a 1,000 baht allowance for domestic travel by 10 million people, has received overwhelming feedback with people signing up every day.

Those people who signed up on the opening day of 23rd September, and later received their SMS confirmation, are reminded that some of the allowance given must be spent today if they haven’t already done so, otherwise the gift sum will expire according to the 14-day condition. However, as long as some of the allowance is used within the 14-day period, the remaining balance stays valid for future spending within registered provinces until 3th November.

In the first 12 days of the campaign, 4,535,561 participants spent 4.296 billion baht in total, most of which ( 4.245 billion baht ) was payments via the g-Wallet application. Much of the expenditure was for goods purchased at OTOP shops, community enterprises, and Blue Flag Pracharat stores at 2.416 billion baht; followed by food purchases of 583 million baht; accommodation payments at hotels and homestays costing 55 million baht, and general spending of 1.2 billion baht.

From the government’s data, spending at chain stores was 817 million baht, or 19 percent of total outlay, showing that the spending was not limited to large retailers, but was distributed to community stores, local grocery stores, and independent businesses participating in the campaign.

In addition to the 1,000 baht allowances, the campaign also offers 15 percent cash back rewards on purchases made via the g-Wallet application using pre-loaded cash. Over the past 12 days, 15,027 persons have already made payments through this channel totaling 42 billion baht, or an average 2,782 baht per person, which tripled over 5 days. Most of the spending was on shopping transactions of 27 million baht, food purchases of 9 million baht, and accommodation and general purchases accounting for 6 million baht.

Most of the transactions were made in Bangkok amounting to 536 million baht, followed by Chonburi at 297 million baht, Samut Prakan at 184 million baht, Pathum Thani at 135 million baht, Ayutthaya at 130 million baht, Rayong at 114 million baht, Nakhon Pathom at 108 million baht, Lamphun at 105 million baht, Chiang Mai at 101 million baht, and Nonthaburi at 101 million baht.

Thai mentality is travel a 1000 baht to spend a free 1000 baht

But you try to convince them they've lost out & they'll convince you they've had a bargain !

From the perspective of income inequality, 4m people attending is indicative of the Prayut's government failure over the past five years to improve income inequality.

Better to have no one show!
