Are you tired of waiting for the next shoe to drop ?

I believe it has been stated that the insurance need not be with a Thai company. Of course, I am sure that there will be IOs who insist that it must be and foreign-bought insurance is invalid. Of course, that can be overlooked if ...... We all know that's the way Thailand works.

What shoes are dropping?  Been here 9 years and the only change is I have to show I still have 800,000 baht in my bank account 90 days after my yearly extension.  I've just parked the money in the account, never use it, and don't need to worry about whether it's 2 months or 3 months seasoning or any of that business.

Less stress in retirement for me means having money in the bank and health insurance.
The money requirement has not changed regarding Visa extensions.
90 day reports, TM 30 and such take an hour of my time very infrequently.

And being of retirement age, if you are living without health insurance, you are always just a day away from bankruptcy in my opinion.   Heck in the USA where I am from, they wont even treat you at 95% of the hospitals unless you have insurance, and the ones that will, you are likely to bleed out in a waiting room

Fake Blues,,

Emergency Medical Treatment & Labor Act (EMTALA)
CMS Guidance to State Survey Agency Directors
Emergency Medical Treatment and Labor Act Technical Advisory Group (EMTALA TAG)
Emergency Medical Treatment & Labor Act (EMTALA)
In 1986, Congress enacted the Emergency Medical Treatment & Labor Act (EMTALA) to ensure public access to emergency services regardless of ability to pay. Section 1867 of the Social Security Act imposes specific obligations on Medicare-participating hospitals that offer emergency services to provide a medical screening examination (MSE) when a request is made for examination or treatment for an emergency medical condition (EMC), including active labor, regardless of an individual's ability to pay. Hospitals are then required to provide stabilizing treatment for patients with EMCs. If a hospital is unable to stabilize a patient within its capability, or if the patient requests, an appropriate transfer should be implemented.

Mmmm all the issues affecting farang currently like TM 30 come from laws 30 to 40 years old. So compliance has remained the same.  After this line in your essay I fell asleep too much to read.

The post is talking about change, change that occurs in every city over a vast quantity of time.

No where does it mention TM 30.

Go back to sleep.

No, I am not a Swede, and I am not from the UK. But I read the news.

Here is just one article which was easy to find with Google:

Is everything they write 100% correct? I don't know. But I read lot of similar articles and my conclusion is that all those foreigners cost a lot less than the average person think they cost.

You are making a mistake interpreting this article.

Quote:

EU migrants are more likely to be in work than natives, with the participation rate for the group at just below 80 per cent, refuting the idea that most immigrants do not "contribute".

There are immigrants and EU immigrants.

In The Netherlands we have a lof of people/immigrants from Indonesia. This has a historical background, it used to be a Dutch colony.  Are these people a problem ?  No. Usually Indonesian people are very kind and friendly. They study, they work. They are good neighbours. Some of my best colleagues at work in the past were Indonesian. The same with Chinese. They work until they drop dead to give their families a better future. The best students at schools in NL are often Chinese. These people have a mentality of not giving up and doing everything they can to improve their future.

The problem is with immigrants from Africa and muslim countries. About 80% of the prison population consists of people from there. Same percentages apply to people getting social benefits.

You saw the message we received in Chiang Mai saying that Ching Mai Immigration was requiring medical insurance fro Non IMM O-A Extnsion of Stay as well as new O-A? You have read were Chiang Mai immigration has stated we are required to report within 24 hours when returning home after being gone overnight from the province (while other offices are using good sense)? OK, wait time and efficiency is improved but ...

No I didn't, probably another hysteria post. I'll be testing that when I do my extension next week. No way I can get medical insurance here, age and pre-existing conditions.

I travel regularly out of Chiang Mai province, and I have never reported when I come back. 5 years now. Assuming they even know I have gone, what can they do? Fine me 1900 baht? A storm in a teacup.

The only way to avoid falling shoes is to hide under the bed.

New shoes will be falling more often as more countries see the benefit of surveilling, tracking, policing, taxing, exploiting, and otherwise squeezing the life out of their citizens and visitors.

For me it seems Thailand is enforcing some existing laws.

And they think about how to handle all those old people who can't or won't pay their hospital bills.

I understand that this makes some people unhappy and probably some people will have to leave Thailand.

But on the other hand I understand that Thailand does not want that some people are a burden to the country. And that's what they are if they don't pay their hospital bills.

I would love to know exactly how many expats do not pay their hospital bills, what I read and see in Issan country far out weighs the BS the government is spinning about billions of Barht being spent to pay for 'farangs' hospital bills. I myself and all my friends pay their own way with medical costs either with health insurance or pay as you go. I think this new BS policy for expats living here is a cooked up kick-back scheme through the big nobs in government and their mates in the health insurance industry. Realistically, take a look at the existing government hospital payments for Thais, 30B to see a doctor and then maybe a few more Barht for some pills and operations one third the price a farang pays. Thais appear to pay very little here for medical costs. Many people will say, Thais cant afford more money for medical costs, I don't believe that, Thais seem to have enough money to pay for a new pick up or M/C on HP and buy alcohol and smokes, but not enough to pay a few extra barht for medical treatment. The health system in Thailand needs a big shake up by the government to help fund its hospitals. Stop relying on tourists, foreign investments, massive taxes on all imports, growing rice that nobody wants, and draining the pockets of expats to prop up their failing economy. Have I left something out.

To quote an excerpt  from a previous  post .

"nationalist, ethnocentric swing globally. "

Absolutely there is.

The curiosity of it is the why  when in terms of communication, general awareness of  global affairs albeit  inundated  with  propagandist  variations in all form of  motivation, justification, derivatives of legitimacy, or  even just plain bs, that even those nations that would assume by virtue of  educational standards or any other measure of comprehension of global social  advancement let  alone  survival are succumbing to or are being subjected  to a devolution of expectation?

The principles of  established democracy are being subverted into autocracy in locations that in contradiction  oppose regimes  that have demonstrated incremental movement towards the original premise of "democratic" principle .

Is it that because  humanity is still so primitive that tribalism continues  to be paramount ?

IMO "dominion" is the current  phase of the devolution of global co operation.

It is their country, Thailand makes the rules as they see fit. We can either live within their rules, try to adapt or leave if we either can't or won't live with them. Now that I am 61 it cost around 150,00 baht per year for decent in and out patient coverage in Thailand and I can see that steadily rising as I get older. Travel insurance is much cheaper. So between this and the ever rising Baht I am only staying in Thailand 6 months a year on a METV and 6 months back in the home country. Gave up my retirement visa a few years back. For my girlfriend it is another matter. Luckily I don't own a car anymore and never bought a home or condo.

Personally I always thought the various visa rules were a bit xenophobic and not well thought out from either a humane or Thai economic point of view. My heart really goes out to those older guys with homes, wives and family, as I sense that more changes are coming.

How many fake marriages of white men to Thai ladies have they found so far?

AFAIK, no such statistics were made public. But "fake marriages" must be a concern to Immigration.
I remember that "upcountry", my fellow Farangs staying with "marriage-visas" had frequent visits by the local Police (checking if the Farang Hubby was on location). As Immigration is a branch of the Royal Thai Police, "spot-checks" by the local cops could easily be done without much administrative effort. I myself stayed with a "Retirement-Visa" and never was visited by any official. Not in 5 years. So I must conclude that "fake-marriages" are on their Radar.

Well, after 7 years here, I have been faced in 2019 with stricter enforcement of the monthly income (without regard to the annual income being above the required monthly income). Then an interpretation in Chiang Mai that demands reporting, within 24 hours of my return home if traveling overnight outside the province. Then the medical insurance  requirement which I cannot meet due to medical history/premium cost.

The TM30 requirement has always been there, has it affected you personally in the last 12 months or so or are you just mentioning what Thaivisa posters have been moaning about generally?  What is your own personal experience of the TM30 and IB?

Are you on a retirement extension?  If so, the medical insurance cannot have affected you as it, so far, it does not apply to us.

Income requirement has been the same for years, that enforcement has not become "stricter" unless you have not been able to comply in the past and you have winged it, surely?

I'd like to know that as well. Being in LOS became different over my lengthy association with the country, but apart from immigration ( 4 days a year ) nothing made it unpleasant.

Perhaps I lived in a better place than those that find LOS unpleasant.

Certainly, an average day in LOS was better than most days in the west, where PC has ruined civil society and the angry, the bolshy and schoolchildren think they are running the country.

Are you saying that you knew what the rules were ( which was your responsibility to know ) and expected that they would never actually enforce existing rules?

TM 30 is only your responsibility if you live in your own house, and it's been a requirement for longer than your 7 years. It may not have been enforced, but it was a requirement.

As for medical, if you can't get insurance, a serious medical problem may exceed your ability to pay for treatment. Surely you don't expect the Thais to pay for it?

I only left LOS because I couldn't afford insurance, and didn't consider it sensible to stay if I couldn't afford to pay for a serious problem.

Nothing you say is proof that times are worse now than before. We all have to comply with existing rules to stay anywhere, and one has to be able to pay for medical care unless in a country where the tax payer pays for it.

Why do you think you should be different? Their country, their rules.

I got the interest the account made- they didn't keep any of it when I left the country.
