Seriously, can you not grasp it for yourself? They are MULTI-ENTRY visas so therefore for people who plan that come in and out through the year, they are NOT for people to plot here for the entire year and only leave the country as they are forced to..the visas for people who wish to live here all year are the extensions of stay. Don't come back at me and ask me anything again on this as that's your lot.

Funny that as I don't feel that I'm forced to leave but rather choose to do so as transferring large amounts of money to do extensions at the moment with the strength of the baht is not so beneficial to me so I choose the border run. Please note that I didn't come back and ask you anything but I did notice you didn't seem keen on saying if it was your opinion or not and seems I may have upset you some how so I won't cause further upset by asking you anything again, but thanks for making the effort to express your deep hurt!

If you have all the answers then stop asking other people what they think, or are you really that bored? If you really can't comprehend what a multiple entry visa is designed for and for what type of person then that is on you, but it's really not rocket science old fella.

They have been wanting to see the original marriage certificate for years now. Many reports about that.

I'm certain that the IO got really annoyed when a foreigner's telling him what the laws are regarding the marriage certificate.

It's been on every Savannakhet advice thread that you need to show them the original marriage certificate, I'd never say that an IO is wrong.

And there's a good reason for it. Some individuals tried to get visas with fake marriage certificates, so quite understandable that they want to see the original.

He shuffled his own grave, in my opinion.

Nope, My wife is not a servant and sometimes not even civil!

Rubbish - showing her government ID is a perfectly normal thing for a government official to do when dealing with other government officials. In this case, it solved the problem, and prevented a costly and time consuming second visit.

My wife (a government official) does it, as do her colleagues, whenever they encounter minor problems with bureaucracy, unfair traffic cops, etc. Works wonders.

It does seem like cronyism.

My partner is a hottie but I get the impression that it makes things worse for me with officials.

You are indeed correct in saying I have all the answers well I have and an answer for everything it's just that they are rarely correct which is why I ask people what they think as it is one way to learn what people think as my mind reading capabilities are quite limited.I thought multi entry visas where designed for making multiple entries and thought that it is up to the competent official to decide my validity and the type of person they apply to and as regards to rocket surgery I'm not that crash hot at it!

Are you suggesting people doing border runs with multi entry visas are doing something illegal? Also what radar? You have to stand in front of immigration officials every 90 days are you suggesting something is wrong with border runs as an alternative to extensions?

Yes, it shouldn't be used as a permanent method of staying here. I'm suggesting that Immigration want people who are staying (more) permanently in Thailand to use the extension method that includes supplying the income requirements and residency rules.

while i don't have an opinion either way (i've used both multie's and extensions over the years) i do think this is the way immigration will ultimately move as they seem to be on a path of moving as many long stayers to extensions as they can or giving them a really hard time staying here on back to back visas.

i hope they don't though as multi non-o's make a nice break, no immigration hassle for 15+ months and a great excuse to do some country hopping in the region!

It's not about keeping people out, it's about Immigration wanting people to have the correct permission to stay in Thailand.

There has always been a hard core of people who want to stay permanently but can't/don't want to abide by the legal method so look for alternative options. As Immigration have, over recent years, tightened the requirements to stay long term in Thailand the the hard core numbers looking for alternative options to stay have increased. With the numbers increasing, increased checking and disruption to weed out inaccurate applications at places like Savanakhet is probably the first step to encourage people who stay in Thailand permanently to use the extension method instead of trying to stay under the radar by continually applying for non immigrant visas and doing border runs etc.

I suspect that recently the numbers have stopped increasing.

Yes, correct.

In your opinion.

Our opinion doesn't count, and nor does yours. It's immigration rules that count.

As more people abuse the rules Immigration will make them tougher. The problem comes when people abuse the system, the tougher rules that are introduced means people who need to use the non immigrant visa for a genuine and legal (one off?) reason also find themselves caught up in the abuse problem.

I use them every 90 days (non-o).

No immigration officer has ever suggested I need a different VISA.

And I've never seen any government document suggesting it isn't the right VISA for me.

All this 'abusing the rules' is in your mind.

I can appreciate that you feel the border run method shouldn't be used for more permanent stay and I would much prefer to be able to get permanent residency status.I think the purpose of Immigration is to enforce the Immigration laws not make them up but I do think that some Immigration officials have some strange interpretations of the laws therefore we must do the best we can with the current system as complicated as it is and I imagine it's not that easy for the officials either.

Until, as has happened to various posters on here, they're refused entry for having to many non immigrant and/or VE stamps in the passport. And, as you will agree, those types of posts are appearing with greater and greater regularity now.

Never seen any post about someone on a non-o (married/dependent) refused entry.

I've just done my 10th in a row, and they don't even speak to me (apart from Arunyaprathet once).

Stamp, stamp in.

You'll need to link to one or it didn't happen.

If I can't get non-os in the future, I'll just pay a 25k bribe for an extension.

But I prefer not to participate in corruption if given a choice.

Well, no Immigration officer has ever suggested to me that I should not use double entry tourist visas for years and years a while ago, the way I was using them.

The reality is, these visas were invented for visiting purposes (and that includes visiting wife). Although Immigration still tolerates usage of multi non O's doing visa runs, or consecutive single non O's.

In simple words:

If you live in Thailand you should NOT need to do a visa run (whether it's non B/O/ED).

That's what extensions of stay are for.
