Accident Bee Hunter Killed by Swarm in Forest Incident

A 47-year-old man known locally as an experienced honeycomb hunter was found dead in a community forest in Kalasin province after being attacked by a swarm of bees in what rescuers have described as a tragic and cautionary incident. The victim, identified as Mr. Somklai, had ventured into the forest near Wat Pa Non Sawan in Nong E Thao subdistrict, Yang Talat district, on the morning of 20 May to search for honeycombs. According to family members, it was a common practice for him, as he regularly collected wild honey as a source of income. At approximately 14:30, while heavy rain fell across the region, local police were alerted to the discovery of a body in the forest. Rescue teams from the Samakkhi Katanyu Kalasin Foundation, led by Mr. Chayaphon Watcharaudomkun, arrived at the scene alongside investigators from Yang Talat Police Station and a duty doctor from Yang Talat Hospital. The deceased was found lying on his back beside his motorcycle, soaked from the rain and still clutching his ignition key in his right hand. His clothing was drenched, and his body bore multiple red welts with bee stingers embedded in his arms, legs, neck, torso, and head. Several bees were still clinging to the victim’s clothing and skin. Investigators believe Mr. Somklai had disturbed a hive and was attacked by hundreds of bees. He likely tried to flee and reach his motorcycle to escape, but succumbed to the venomous stings before he could escape the area. His death is estimated to have occurred one to two hours before the body was discovered by a local forager. Authorities ruled out foul play, and the family did not request further investigation. His body was transported to his home in Ban Dong Noi village for funeral rites. Mr. Chayaphon urged the public, especially those who forage in forests during the rainy season, to exercise caution. “People searching for wild mushrooms, vegetables, or honey must be aware of the dangers posed by venomous animals. Bee hunting, in particular, is extremely risky. Bees are highly aggressive when provoked, and multiple stings can lead to death,” he said. Adapted by Asean Now from Workpoint 2025-05-22. -

Picture courtesy of Amarin A bitter inheritance dispute turned violent in Surat Thani province on 21 May, when a man opened fire on his brother-in-law and three-year-old niece, seriously injuring both, in a chilling escalation of a long-running family feud. Police were alerted to the shooting around 15:20, at Soi 9, Khun Thale Sai Tri, Mueang District. Investigators from Khun Thale Police Station and forensic officers rushed to the scene, a raised, single-storey concrete house, where they found two victims lying wounded on the concrete beside the home. The victims were identified as Mr. Phattharakon, 28, who suffered a critical gunshot wound above his right eye and Miss Panicha, aged 3 years and 5 months, who had been shot in the back of the head. Both were rushed to Surat Thani Hospital by emergency rescue teams. The child’s mother, Ms. Sutthida, 30, was unharmed, the victims were her husband and daughter. The suspected gunman, Mr. Natthaphat, 38, later surrendered to police with a .38 calibre handgun. He is the half-brother of Ms. Sutthida and the uncle of the injured child. According to Ms. Jaruwan 28, a cousin of Ms. Sutthida, the dispute stemmed from an ongoing conflict over the division of inherited land. The suspect and his half-sister had been involved in a legal battle after their father allocated equal shares of land to both children. Mr. Natthaphat, however, reportedly demanded the entire inheritance, prompting a court case which was due to be resolved next month. Jaruwan stated that at the time of the incident, the family had just returned home from a local market. Mr. Phattharakon was feeding snacks to his daughter when the suspect approached and began firing without warning. Police are continuing their investigation, while the suspect remains in custody awaiting formal charges. Adapted by Asean Now from Amarin 2025-05-22.
