Emergency UK Passport

Featured Replies

So my visa expires in Thailand in on the 8th of November and I have a lot my passport. I have successfully and paid for an emergency passport through the UK gov website and I am waiting for the appointment to pick it up from there consulate in Bangkok.
I have travel plans from Thailand to Malaysia on the 7th of November and then to return to Thailand on the 8th to make a new genuine passport. How long is a UK emergency passport valid for?

  • You can use an emergency travel document to travel to your destination through a maximum of 5 countries. You can also normally use it to return to the country you’re applying from if you live there.

You can use an emergency travel document to travel to your destination through a maximum of 5 countries. You can also normally use it to return to the country you’re applying from if you live there.

Your travel plans (countries and dates) will be printed on your emergency travel document. If you change your travel plans once you have your emergency travel document, you’ll need to apply for a new one.

A emergency passport is valid for one year.

But you can only travel as shown on it.

From Wiki...

The emergency passport can be used to make a single or return journey to the UK or another country of residence, via a maximum of five transit countries.[4]

The emergency passport is issued with a validity which is limited to the shortest time appropriate to the holder’s travel requirements whilst taking account of the transit and destination country requirements (for example, many countries require travel documents to have a minimum validity of six months).

This is as I recall from a friend using one... it is only valid for travel back to the UK.

thank you very much for the reply, I mentioned my ravel plans on it. If it is valid for one year, can I not add travel plans onto of the ones I have applied for?

You can travel to any country shown on it and return to Thailand.

Does he live in Thailand? As his Visa is expiring I had perhaps falsely assumed not.

the travel plans will be shown on the permit and can not be added to, fresh plans will involve a fresh permit at £100 a pop

Yes I live here and have done for 9 years, I supplied documents to the UK gov to prove that I do etc

That is a very general term used.

If you have a address here that is enough to prove your are living here when applying for a UK passport.

Fair enough, just be sure of the facts before committing. Hope it works out.

My visa runs out on the 8th so I need to leave and return before, a new passport takes 5-6 weeks. I've done it before in Bangkok, so this is the only way

Because it can take 2 or 3 weeks to get one.

He needs to leave the country to get a new permit to stay in the country on the 8th. He cannot leave the country without a passport or ETD.

Again thanks Joe, you know more about these situations than most. Do you think it will work out for me?

Yes I do.

Just be sure your ETD shows your trip to Malaysia and back to here on it.

I paid for the emergency passport and everything was green checked, but they have not given me a date to go and pick it up in Bangkok. Do I arrange that myself or just turn up, or do they inform me? It's been 2 days now

I think you should contact the embassy about it.

Not sure how it works when you apply online. Most people do it in person.

I called up the embassy and they said that because I am currently on a tourist visa, I would not be allowed to travel back into Thailand on an emergency passport. Can you confirm this Joe?

That might be their rules but is is certainly not a Thai immigration rule. People have used a ETD to enter the country with a tourist visa.

But I have also read this (this is for Malaysia) however, I may need a passport for Malaysia but I was fairly sure they offer one on arrival?

ETD's are usually issued for emergency travel back to home country.

Transit through other countries is allowed in this travel, but as it is issued quickly without full checking procedures, nor has biometrics, few countries will issue a visa nor allow visa free entry on this temporary document. (Apparently Joe has heard of a successful case in Thailand)

Also, they are usually issued with a limited validity which also would deter another country admitting the holder. You state you have been living here long term yet you are NOT a resident of Thailand as apparently you use tourist visas and similar to stay long term.

Thailand's entry procedures are  a lottery so if you do manage to get back to an entry airport on that document (the airline may not uplift) anything could happen.

I would advise return to home country to get a new passport.

I assume it could include Malaysia, Thailand and 3 others before the UK.

For entry to Malaysia it states this here. https://www.lcct.com.my/help/visa-and-permits/entry-requirements-to-malaysia/

"Every person entering Malaysia must possess a valid national Passport or internationally recognized Travel Document valid for travel to Malaysia."

I have been a resident, renting houses in my name and not my name, but right now I am on a tourist visa. I've had other visa others before however.
If I booked a ticket from Bangkok back to the UK for say the end of November, that may be proof enough for me to re-enter into Thailand?

I actually flew to Malaysia last month from Cambodia with my passport, but that was with a standard passport. There were no issues whatsoever with immigration or visas on arrival. I'm stuck between trying my luck with this or having to fly all the way back to the UK, wait for a new passport and come back, something I don't want to do if I have to

The only way you can be a resident is if you have PR or citizenship. Living long term or renting doesn't make you a legal resident (unfortunately). I know people who have lived, worked and raised families here for over 30 years. They still extend every 12 months and report every 90 days (or 24hrs).

I've explained what I know through experience. You wouldn't be able to enter my country on that ETD, but Thailand exists in another dimension. Good luck.
