Back in 2008 I was in Argentina for a trade show when I had my travel bag stolen and in the bag were my passport and my Thai assistant’s passport.

I suspect thing have changed since 2008. At one time a ETD was only valid for one trip back to your home country.

  • its a bit absurd to apply for an EMD in Thailand only to return there to get a new passport   why not just get a new passport in the 1st place   mine took about 3-4 days

  • You can use an emergency travel document to travel to your destination through a maximum of 5 countries. You can also normally use it to return to the country you’re applying from if you live there.

  • A emergency passport is valid for one year.  But you can only travel as shown on it.

yeah that's the thing with this crazy place, things change from person to person and day to day; nothing is every really certain unless you have it certified, and even then problems arise lol

Below is an account of my adventure when I tried to get an emergency passport.

Please note that the information I was given may not be correct but it is what I was told.

Back in 2008 I was in Argentina for a trade show when I had my travel bag stolen and in the bag were my passport and my Thai assistant’s passport.

We were due to fly back to Bangkok the next afternoon, so we went to our respective embassies to get emergency passports.

My assistant got his emergency Thai passport without a problem but it was a different story at the British Embassy in Buenos Aires.

They informed me that I could only fly to the UK on my emergency passport.

I informed them that I had held a Non-Immigrant B visa but they insisted that I could not fly into Thailand on a British emergency passport.

Therefore, I was left with no other choice but to hang around in Argentina for a full replacement passport.

As I mention above, this may not have been the correct information but judging by other peoples reports it would seem that the result could be dependent on the embassy/person/time of day, etc.

BTW, I was informed later that the Thai Embassy would have given me a visa on my emergency passport so that I could return to Thailand on it but I only found this out after my original flight out date.

Thanks for the info on that

My other idea is to simply head to Laos as I've been many times, and then get a new UK passport there.

I assume you mean after you get the ETD. You should check to see what is required to prove you are staying in Laos to apply for the passport there.

After getting the ETD you could just leave and re-enter the country to get a visa exempt entry. Your new passport should be back before the 30 days from it ends (average normal time is 2 to 3 weeks now).

Do you mean after I get the ETD I can leave and re-enter Thailand without any issues (land border)
I have tried looking for an embassy and consulate in Vientiane to get a UK passport, it seems a lot easier in Bangkok

Yes

But you have to be sure your ETD shows an entry to the other country is allowed and they accept them. Not really any different than flying out and back to get one.
