Driver killed, 6 students injured after minivan rear ends truck in Chonburi

A driver was killed and six female students were injured when the minivan they were travelling in rear ended an 18 wheeler truck in Chonburi on Saturday.

 

Rescue workers attended the scene of the accident in Na Pa at 5.30am.

 

They found the driver and passengers trapped inside the Bangkok-Chanthaburi mini van.

 

The van suffered extensive damage and the 33 year old driver was pronounced dead at the scene.

 

The six female students, aged between 17 and 23, were freed from the wreckage and rushed to hospital. 

 

Police said the van rear ended an 18 wheeler trailer truck that was carrying large steel rods. 

 

The driver of the truck, which suffered only minor damage, told police he felt something at the rear of the vehicle and thought some of the rods may have fallen from the trailer. 

 

He then realised the minivan had struck the vehicle and called the police.

 

Police are investigating the accident but believe the driver may have fallen asleep at the wheel.

The damage to the van suggests that the load of 'large steel rods' was overhanging at the back. A common and dangerous practice that the police never seem to be concerned about.

 

'Submarining', as it's somewhat dismissively called has caused many deaths because it completely negates the safety features of vehicle.

 

Here's hoping that the innocent victims all make a full recovery.

Another sleeping driver !,Maybe the Government needs to make

it mandatory for mini vans to have a drivers mate who sits next

to him with a stick ,and his job is the give the driver a wack on 

head,if he sees him nodding,BUT then you would need a drivers

mate, mate to make sure he does not nod off,so on and so on.

From the video it does not look as though the load is overhanging the back of the truck, see at  3.05

i am sorry there were passengers in the van.

 

after just completing a 1800 kilometer motorcycle trip I have little sympathy for these mini van drivers who were trying to kill me on the highway everyday.

What's new? These drivers believe that they can drive 24/7 if they consume Red Bull, instead of getting some sleep, and avoiding the alcohol. You see TV commercials showing a sleepy driver almost passing out. One of his mates hands him an energy drink, and voila, he's alert and responsible. Unfortunately, responsible and innocent drivers are not immune from, and all too often are victims of these idiots' irresponsibility.

Speed kills.  To hit a slow-moving lorry with such force means the van driver was speeding.  NO attempt is made by Thai police to limit speedsters.  Just observe Pattaya's bandits raking it in, whilst two sets of red traffic lights are ignored by speeding drivers outside two police stations further up the road!

If you don't know how you should not be driving a bike, it's easy to stay away from almost all traffic on a decent size bike, unless your trips are downtown BKK?

When the load is overhanging by more than a metre a red flag has to be attached at the rear of the load. I am not sure how much overhang is allow but I have seen some 2 and 3 metre overhangs.....often without red flags.

I stopped using mini vans to get places 3 years ago and am very glad that I did. The big buses on the companies have 2 people up front, and when I look around the bus

I usually see the Thai passengers having naps barely 10 minutes after leaving the

station. Seems like a lot of them do not get a good sleep in the night.
