You missed my question, how often are you asked for proof of address?

Admittedly not often, but having the yellow book, saves me a trip to the Immi office.

When we moved from Phuket where I had a yellow book, we went to the amphur office and they said to return the yellow book and they gave me a paper to give to the new amphur.

And here in Kantharalak the amphur made a new yellow book for me when we gave them the paper from Phuket and my wifes blue book from her house here.

That's the correct way to change official address in Thailand. First be removed from the old address, then get registered at the new one. However, at least for Thai citizens and blue book, they agreed not always strict about it. I know of one case that a person got registered in a new book without being removed from old one. Few years later changed address again, but this time the district office demanded he goes back to the original district office, be officially removed from that book, then go to the second district, enter correctly into that blue book and removed, and only then go back to the 3rd district to be registered in the new address book...

Another person I know moved to a different province. Went to the district office and got registered at the local blue book. Only a year after that he went back to the old district office and got himself removed from the old address book - no problems.

Talk about beating around the bush.

How many times in the last 5 or 10 years have you been asked for proof of residence?

In the last 2 years requesting the retirement visa extension in addition to all the documentation, they wanted to copy the yellow book.

Having a yellow book is not mandatory. Many foreigners rent houses, but have no yellow book. It's not more than proof of residency.

The yellow book belongs to the house, it lists the persons (foreigners) who are living there. It does not belong to you as person.

So the yellow house book stays with the housemaster/owner. You or the housemaster/owner should remove your name if you no longer live there.

My yellow book has no reference in it as to who the housemaster/owner is and it stays with me, not them. As for an inanimate object owning the book??

When you have a yellow book you can also get a pink ID card and this can be used for legitimation at the post office.

And I have used it several times to get in at Thai prices at national parks.

When you move out of the place you are in now, you are supposed to register at the new place you move to.

The procedure is:

 - Take the yellow book to the amphoe office that issued it, along with the 'chao baan'. They will put a stamp in the first page saying "ย้าย" (moved)

 - Take the yellow book to the amphoe office where you will now register your presence, along with the 'chao baan' of the new place. They will issue you a new yellow book registered at your new address.

It's best to do these on the same day, but of course that's not always possible.

If you forget step 1, they will turn you away at the 'new' amphoe office, telling you to go back to the 'old' amphoe office and get the current book stamped.

Total cost the last time I did it was 40 THB.

Thank you for your message, just a question what is "chao baan"? ????

I can tell you about my experiences

1 when I bought my first new motorcycle (8 years ago), the dealer only requested the yellow book and my passport, otherwise he would not have been able to sell it to me.

2 opening the bank account the branch wanted a copy of the yellow book

3 converting my international driver's license into a Thai license DLT asked me to copy the yellow book, the same thing happened when I renewed my driver's license.

4 lately (2018 and 2019) requesting the annual extension the immigration office asked me for proof of residence and therefore as proof I had to provide the yellow book, actually in the previous 6 years I had never been asked to prove residence.

If you move to another province, then the yellow book in your name isn't valid anymore.

A rental contract is also proof of residency, and it's of course accepted by Immigration for the annual extension. No need for a yellow house book.

if you do not have the rental contract with you, the only possible proof of residence is to show the yellow book, and this is what I have done.

It is that poster's romanisation of the Thai word that is usually translated into English as house master or householder.

In your yellow house registration book, your status is shown on page 2 below the line with your name. If you live in a rented residence it is normal that no house master (เจ้าบ้าน) is listed in your book and that the entry to the right of the field name สถานภาพ (Status) – framed in red in the attachment below – translates as something like "person living in this place"

Thanks,

therefore for the registration as for the cancellation of the residence, in the Amphoe office must be present both the house master and the "person living in the place" right?

How often do you use yours as proof of address?

As often as you need to supply proof of address for any reason. It's just much more convenient to use a Yellow book than any other form.

Just a thought, how often are you asked officially by the police to show your Driving licence? For me it was over four years ago and probably only three times in the last fifteen years. It's still more convenient to be able to show it when you are asked.

Very true, it's the same for Thai nationals with their blue book. Like Thais, you simply go to your new local Ampur and get a new yellow book for your new address.

When I apply for/renew my pink ID card, every year when I go for my extension, every time I renew my driving licence, every time my bank requires proof of residence or I open a new account at a different bank, every time I want to buy/sell a vehicle, etc, etc, etc.

Google translates mine as "Resident of the village"

The pink ID-card is a proof of having a yellow house book. You can't get the pink ID-card without a yellow house book.

One reason not to use google translate.

My yellow book says "ผู้อาศัย" which means inhabitant, occupant, or even tenant.

Not true. Many Thais don't live at where they are registered. It is possible to own more than one house! Likewise, I don't  love at where my yellow book is registered and it is valid.

I know that.

You asked how often a yellow book was needed. I gave several examples, one of which was when applying for/renewing a pink ID card.

In other words you need to show your yellow book as part of the pink ID card application, which is a reason you were asking for.

It is true. Both the blue book and yellow book denote your official residence.

Who told you this?

The yellow and blue house book is address specific. You can only have one at the time. I know that in several provinces you are supposed to go to your amphoe when moving permanently and they will give you a letter to take to the new amphoe to get a house book for the new address. If you have two homes in different provinces, one has to be the primary address. I have heard about thai people when living in other provinces because of their work, they have had problems when visiting a hospital and been told to go the hospital in the amphoe where they belong.

Have you ever renewed a pink non Thai ID card?

And I was asking someone else.

Your yellow house book is officially valid in your amphoe and at the address in the book. Move to another province and it's 100% invalid.
