Yielding to pressure from farmers and distributors, a government-established committee has recommended a six-month delay in the planned ban on hazardous agrichemicals paraquat and chlorpyrifos and limited continued use of a third, glyphosate.

“We haven’t yet experienced recession, but we’re on the verge of it if we look at quarter-on-quarter growth of 0.1 per cent in the third quarter, the positive result coming from the downward revision for growth in the second,” said Kobsidthi.

 

The Thai economy is on the verge of a recession while the baht will remain strong, a financial analyst has warned.

U-turn on ban of three farm chemicals angers Bhumjaithai party

In an abrupt about-turn, which threatens to cause a rift in the Government’s coalition, the new National Hazardous Substances Committee (NHSC), chaired by Industry Minister Suriya Juangroongruangkit of the Palang Pracharat party, overturned its predecessor’s decision to ban paraquat, glyphosate and chlorpyrifos effective from December 1st.

Anutin and Mananya claim ban on three farm chemicals remains intact

Public Health Minister Anutin Charnvirakul and Deputy Agriculture Minister Mananya Thaiseth have played down the apparent U-turn over the December 1st enforcement of the ban on paraquat, glyphosate and chlorpyrifos by insisting that the ban remains intact.

Another leatherback sea turtle lays eggs in Phang Nga

Today (November 27), Dr. Thon Thamrongnawasawat posted on his Facebook about a positive update on the leatherback sea turtle eggs at Thai Mueang Beach in Phang Nga, as it seems a new mother turtle just laid eggs on the beach and the spot is quite close along the coast to the previous one.

TMD confirms recent earthquakes in Myanmar, Laos did not affect Thailand

BANGKOK(NNT) - A 4.0 magnitude earthquake last night struck Myanmar on the Myanmar-China border at 9 p.m., with the epicenter 6 kilometers below the surface; it was followed by a 3.3 magnitude quake in Laos at 10:39 p.m. The Meteorological Department’s (TMD) Director General, Group Capt Somsak Khaosuwan said today these are aftershocks from the main quake in the recent past which Thai people should not be alarmed about.

(Reuters) - William Ruckelshaus, picked by Richard Nixon as the first head of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and as deputy attorney general before being fired for defying the president in the Watergate scandal, died on Wednesday at the age of 87, U.S. media reported.

Rice price may spike next year due to decrease in production

Speaking after a meeting with the rice price guarantee committee, the Department of Internal Trade’s director-general Wichai Phochanakit revealed on Wednesday (November 27) that 90 per cent of the rice grown in crop year 2019/2020 had been harvested, but the volume had decreased drastically due to drought and floods.
