Our beautiful green river

A picture of an emerald green Mekong River has become an internet sensation after being posted on Facebook page “Nakhonphanom Update” on Thursday (November 28).

This phenomenon surprised many people as Mekong River is usually brown.

The river has now turned into green and the water is much clearer making it looks like the sea.

It is thought to be the result of the tide being at its lowest in many years, which could be the result of the construction of a dam in China blocking water flow.

Or China released toxic chemicals coloring the entire river. Would not be surprised if that far fetched theory turned out to be true. They don't care.

The tide being at it's lowest?  The TIDE controlled by dams UPSTREAM?  Really...….

More likely something toxic has killed off all the algae and plants.

I'd say low water, hence less erosion upstream.

Quite so. Low water and sluggish flow means that sediments settle out of the water as well.

It Ain't Like that in Nong Khai !!

Because you're upstream aren't you. closer to the source of the sediment. As the water flows slowly down to Nakhon Phanom more of those sediments settle out of the water. Simple really.

What ever it is it is not natural and China is to blame as always as they are super arrogant and super selfish

I can hear CCR wailing in the background about now....

Logic takes time to catch on.

Used to sit on a hillside with my girlfriends watching the toxic yet stunning LA sunsets of the mid 70s. So romantic.

Where I lived in 4,000 islands the river went green every year. Some of it as others have said the sediment settles and the other thing is algae growing. You are seeing green algae through clearer water.
