Hello

I'm looking for work in Bangkok and around South East Asia. Please let me introduce myself.

Currently I live in Malmö, Sweden and I work as a freelance video producer and video journalist. This means I do video photography, editing, directing, sound engineering and more. Before this I had a production company where we mostly made commercials for regional and national TV but also business to business productions and educational material on DVD-video, CD-ROM and other formats. Client examples are Volvo Articulated Haulers, Bonnier Multimedia and VTI. My old company still exists but I sold my half and decided to move on to new adventures. I've also taught video- and TV-production for three years to classes of different age and experience. All in all it's around fifteen years in the business. Not bad for a 32 year old. Now I'm about to relocate to Bangkok.

I have invested in professional equipment which is highly portable. A list of it can be found on my homepage (in Swedish). I've handled cameras and formats such as Digital Beta, Betacam SP, DV, S-VHS and VHS. I'm experienced in analog A/B-roll editing (though it was a long time ago) and different non linear editors such as SpeedRazor, DPS Velocity and Sonic Foundry Vegas. Other software is Optibase DVD authoring, Digital Fusion, Photoshop, ACID, DVD Architect, Dreamweaver and more.

I'm looking for any companies and organizations who are interested in my services at location in Bangkok and around South East Asia. I can produce reports, news, documentaries, and various information for internal or external use - with the most powerful media there is. This can then be distributed over Internet or Intranet, by videotape, CD or DVD and by television. I also have some connections in Bangkok if additional help is needed.

I'd like to work full time but I also do work on a project to project basis. One hour, one day, one month or one year – everything is of interest.

Please reply to me with any questions and feel free to forward this email to anyone who might be interested.

There are many good hints and tips in the message archive, this is your best and perhaps your only *real* guide to this adventure that exists anywhere in the world.  Even the books on working in Thailand arn't as good as this message forum, in fact those books just don't exist yet!

You should decide if you want your own company(freelance) in Thailand, or to work for a media company within Thailand(working for someone else) beforehand.  Then you can research either, else your direction is too general I think.  That also meanss whether or not you sell your equipment.

Your market is so specialised, i'd make a list of and research potential companies and remember, relocate and then job hunt.  Turn up in person too after making a polite appointment, avoid Human Resources if you can.  Do you already have contacts in the business that can give you a big helping hand, that is probably your best bet.  Are you internationally established and recognised, that would be useful.  What is the competition like for skills like yours in Asia?  Are you prepared to accept an Asian salary?

It sounds like your line of work involves a lot of people interaction before the filming.  If your freelance in a team, where others direct and can speak Thai then great, else if your entirely solo this is going to be a huge and very big issue, especially with tight deadlines.  I'm guessing a little how it works, but these things always have tighter than tight deadlines.

An idea that hits me is for you to do some kind of documentary or something like that on Thailand as an avenue for contacts and for a way to get closer as an experiment before throwing everything away.  These are always popular and there are never enough of them.  Many people here could suggest ideas for a footing.  I have several myself.

It may be easier for many reasons from what i've seen to make your base in Hong Kong, Singapore or elsewhere than Thailand!  This is also worth giving consideration, especially considering your specialised line of work.  That's me feeling would like to hear other thoughts.

How many times have you been to Thailand, and how many to other Asian countries?

Nothing is impossible, but you've given us little to help you with assuming you want and need some advice ...

Regards
