Foreign tourist numbers on course to hit 39 million next week

More than 38 million foreign tourists have visited Thailand since January 1 to December 20, the highest number in many years and the total is expected to hit 39 million on December 27, TAT public relations director Thanet Petchsuwan said.

 

The Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) announced the numbers during the launch of a campaign “Thailand’s Luckiest Visitor, the Amazing Smashing Success” to promote Thailand as the “Preferred Destination”.

 

The total, 38.26 million, was confirmed after the arrival of Devanshi Deepak Kesaria, a tourist from India, who was the “luckiest visitor”. She travelled by Spicejet on her first visit to Thailand and plans to enjoy her vacation in Bangkok and Pattaya.

 

She will receive round tickets for two to travel from her home country to the Kingdom along with free service of the Airports of Thailand (AOT)’s limousine taking the passengers from the airport to the accommodation provided by the AOT.

 

TAT believes the campaign will promote the country and attract several tourists from all over the world to travel to Thailand and spend on Thai products and services.

One day tourist arrivals are down.  Next day they are breaking records off tourist arrivals.  Seem like a lot of fake news to me.

Yes several tourists will arrive from all over the world if your really lucky a few more might come too .

Better not to leave the house now too many tourists around.

Maybe foreigners passing through the airports, but not tourists.

So every time an offshore worker does his monthly round trip he is counted as an incoming tourist.

Maybe TAT can tell us where all of these "tourists" are going. Pattaya is 40% down, Phuket and Chiang Mai 30-35% down, so obviously not there. With the all powerful super TM30 they must be able to tell us where are the new tourist hot spots. 

So each time a person arrives they are counted as a tourist, regardless if it's a layover or an expat returning "home" ?

 

Where are all the tourists, everyone hotel is complaining, bars are empty, please explain, but the figures don't lie.

No. It's pretty simple. Airbnb and similar up massively, Indians and Chinese don't frequent the bars. Expats don't count for much even if they all left and came back on successive days three times a week. There isn't enough. Another TVF myth.

OK, so they're in their Airbnb's, but do they ever venture out?

Other authorities numbers seem to be much the same. Take the figures for Chinese departures to Thailand for instance.

The Chinese always went to Vietnam. They share a 786 mile border. Those in border areas have trade passes for daily crossings. No mention of fiddled figures there of course. Market traders get marked down as entries anyway.

 

Most Chinese by the way means more than 700m. Only 130m hold passports/trade passes.

It had to be a high spending Indian winner there is no one else here????

I wonder how countries in the EU calculate tourist figures. I might arrive to Italy, travel overland to France and fly out from Germany, never once having to show my passport in France. Would I then not be counted as one of their millions of tourists?

Statistics from hotels and other accommodations;

Statistics from Visa and Mastercard credit cards (the real big brothers ????

I think there are including all the transit passengers this year and that must be the work of the new guy with the positive spin doctoring and accounting practices!He's worth his weight in gold.

Reportedly, they only come for the temples, but sleep under the bridge at night. Then, in the morning, they have a lavish breakfast at the Dusit Thani for 5,000 baht. (Except, if they are Indian. In this case they spend 10,000 baht, paid, cash, with two crisp 5,000-baht banknotes...)
