I had a non Immigrant Ed Visa and I left Thailand without filling out the re entry form. I know that the visa is now invalid. Can I apply for a tourist visa to get back into Thailand and meet with my school to give me the necessary documents to then go to Loas or Cambodia and get another ED visa? Would it be possible to have a ticket to fly to Loas 2 weeks after arriving in Thailand and not have a tourist visa at all? What would be the best course of action here? Thank you.

Where are you currently?

Just do border entry if nearby.

Visa exempt 30 day.

I am currently in US. So I don't think I have that option.

Seems to me you have 2 options. Email the school and have them forward all the documents needed to reapply for the Ed Visa in the US, or fly back to Thailand, enter visa exempt, and then do the Ed Visa in Laos.

Which one of those I would choose would be dependent on how long I had been in Thailand already. I'm not really sure a tourist visa would actually help you in this situation if you are worried they might deny you a visa exempt entry, but then I suppose it could not do any harm either.

I entered Thailand on September 1 of this year on a tourist visa and used it until November 26th when I obtained my education Visa. Do you think this would hurt my chance or getting another tourist visa?

I would contact the Thai embassy/consulate nearest you in the U.S., you might still be able to obtain a multiple entry on your original VISA, or you can re-apply, it may be easier there to obtain the multiple entry VISA again, as your original Ed VISA is likely null and void now. Of course they should be able to advise you best.

I really would not want to speculate. You'll definitely get the tourist visa if you apply for it, but that doesn't guarantee admittance. Ultimately it is entirely up to the IO who stamps you in. Technically, you are not a tourist so they would be well within their rights to deny you entry if you tried to present yourself as one. I personally don't think that would happen given your relatively clean history, but I'm not the one who has to decide.

If you are genuinely concerned, you should get the Ed Visa in the US before returning. Otherwise, if you are really risk averse, fly into Vientiane and then cross the border overland. That way, if they do reject you then you can just sit in Laos and work it out from there rather than being forced to return to the US.

Thank you for the information. Greatly appreciated.

A embassy cannot issue re-entry permits. They only issue new visas.

I assume you were on the 90 day entry you got from your non-ed visa.

You best option appears to be to enter without a visa to get a 30 day visa exempt entry. You should not have a problem getting one unless you have done several of them previously the year. You may be asked by the airline to show a ticket out of the country within 30 days of arrival. You could show a low cost one way ticket to any nearby country from any airport here.

You may not be able to get another non-ed visa in Vientiane since they will not issue another one if you have obtained one in the past year.

Where did you get your now invalid non-ed visa?

I got my previous ED visa in Savanakhet.

Would it make sense to get the required documents from the school then fly to Loas or Cambodia and apply for another ED visa there?

You probably will not be able to get one there or Vientiane.

Neither of those location would be a good choice.

Perhaps the consulate in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam would be a better choice.

If you had time it might be better to apply while in the states. They require less supporting documents from the school than any of the nearby locations to here. See: https://thaiembdc.org/consular-services/non-immigrant-visas/non-immigrant-visa-category-ed/

You can apply by mail to the embassy in Washington or the official consulates in New York, Chicago or Los Angeles. Or in person only at one of the honorary consulates. See: https://thaiembdc.org/royal-thai-honorary-consulates-general-in-the-u-s/

You said that I can only apply in person at only one of the locations. Which one?

Your best course of action is probably to return to Thailand visa exempt or with a tourist visa. If you have substantial previous time in Thailand as a tourist, getting the visa involves less risk when coming back to Thailand. Getting another Non Ed visa may not be easy. There have been reports of consulates refusing to issue more than one a year.

OP, I don't think your options are not simple if continue the ed visa route.

If you were to obtain setv in USA enter Los then later try to obtain an ed visa you most likely would find it difficult. A member few months back tried for setv in Saigon after having an ed visa. His pp was returned with the red void stamp. Granted he had longer history in Los than you. He also had used his 2 border entries.

I would fly into Thailand. Obtain 30 day visa exempt. That can be extended and you would still have your 2 border entries for 2020. That gives you 6 months

Do you believe that I would be able to get in on visa exempt if I had a flight booked 30 days later?

Would I be able to get into Thailand using tourist visa? Would my void education visa be a red flag for them?

Not a problem IMO.

No problem to enter with a tourist visa.

Your non-ed was invalid before you left the country since it had been already used.

You will need the onward flight for the airline.

Your history is not long compared to many. So no reason you should not be able to obtain visa exempt.

Also, are you saying it wouldn't be a problem if I used tourist visa at the airport or at border entry?

Either one should be OK.

Just so you know that since you can only get 3 education visas in Thailand( beginner intermediate and advanced) the one that you did have that is now invalid will be counted as 1 Visa so when you go back to school and get another one (if you were on your first when this happened) it will be a new 2nd ed Visa which is only good for 10 months and 3 weeks max. And you can no longer get it at any of the neighboring countries here you will have to go back to your home country to get it. None of the neighboring embassies will issue back-to-back education Visas any longer.
