PHUKET: Phuket has suffered its first death during the annual “Seven Days of Danger” road-safety campaign for the New Year, which began at midnight last night.

The death came less than 24 hours after Deputy Minister of Interior Niphon Boonyamanee presided over the opening ceremony of New Year accident operations center at Phuket Provincial Hall yesterday afternoon (Dec 26).

Although the Thai Road Safety Committee (ThaiRSC) confirmed on its website earlier today that one person had died in a road accident since midnight, the website included no details of the accident or the death.

Doesnt this go against the instruction from head Muppet of BIB who said there would be no checkpoints over the 7 days of hell as it would allow traffic to move quicker?

Some much needed funds first then they will all be to drunk to stand and stop ????

Which of course extends to cover 365 days of the year.

It is proven and history teaches us all the time, until the police are willing to do the necessary work, you will never be able to avoid road deaths.
No Thai is afraid or respectful of the police!

Nonsense, these deaths would be included in these numbers.

Checkpoints are a pathetic substitute for mobile patrol units, which seemingly are not needed in a country with such high death rates on the highway.

In our village a checkpoint was setup with 3-4 policemen sitting at a table in the shade - several more wandering around like lost souls.  Ghost drivers unloading produce and wares for the weekly market, helmetless motorcyclists driving through with impunity - all in all no better policing than any other day of the year.

Actually, the deaths that occur later in hospital are not included.

The official government annual road death statistics only counts deaths that happen on the road. They do not even include deaths of occupants of a house that a car ran into. There is nothing really wrong with that; it is just the way they do it, and it is easy to do. (And it is the only possible way o do it when reporting road deaths day by day as they occur.)

The WHO annual figures do, however, include an estimate of the number of accident victims who died over the next 30 days after the accident. This is the bring the numbers in accord with international norms.

To estimate the number of road deaths according to international norms, just double the reported number. Then you will be close.

They are included in these stats.
