paddypower
''Idiocracy'' this oldie (2004) has been recommended to me many times. finally watched it last night. Idiotically funny, with spot on observations that are applicable today - and it doesnt drag on, at 80 minutes. Which is to say why one film critic wrote: 'The film was shelved good and hard after its initial release, and it's not difficult to see why. It's just a little too close to genuine reality' (expecially when one sees how the White House gets protrayed. Interesting to read from the producer of the tv series ''Braindead'' (which protrays the shallow nuttiness of Washington DC) that it was pulled by NBC after one season, for much the same reason. No use letting people know that the lunatics are running the asylum. Edited June 14, 2020 by paddypower add photo

The last frames show the entire Thai crew. Delroy Lindo should get an Oscar nomination. Clark Peters a supporting nod. Watched it & didn't find it enjoyable at all (also too long at 2.5 hours) though I do take your point that Delroy Lindo did an awesome acting job. Didn't see anything of Bangkok in there (all the city scenes looked like they were in HCM) & the CM parts were jungle so unrecognisable as such... I wouldn't watch it for the Thailand link.

giddyup
Thought I'd watch "Manhunter" from 1986 again, hard to understand the 7.2 IMDB rating it gets, as it's slow, the acting is mediocre, very overrated IMO. Yet when I first saw it, before the other Hannibal movies were made, I thought it was great. Just shows how tastes change.

Popular Post paddypower
update - saw Da 5 Bloods, last nite. some very good acting. but too long - unfortunately Lee fell in love (too much) with the concepts of his movie, some of which were very well portrayed (eg the floating market scene). It has ''Hollywood studio accountants'' written all over the introduction of a romantic angle, which pxxxs's me off. I have to admit that yet again, it's a critics' favourite, but the audience reviews have it right - a 70 rather than a 95. A disappointing follow up to the brilliant BlackkKlansman, which showed the delicate storytelling abilities of Lee for which he is famous.
Popular Post balo
I am watching a very entertaining new series on Amazon Prime called Upload. In the future , you can decide if you want a digital afterlife or if you want the good old fashion way , normal death, if you choose the digital way, your brain (head) will be uploaded to a server and you can choose what kind of "paradise" you want to live in. So you can live forever "online". And the best thing about it , you can meet your loved ones who are still alive, or not turned digital yet. Of course they also want the digital afterlife so they can come and be with you forever , in a digital version of themselves. Very entertaining. And funny. You posted about "memories" and I take it that you were involved in the Vietnam war, so if you were, I hope that what I'm about to post will not be taken the wrong way! From all of the movies I have seen regarding Vietnam, from that one, through to the basic premise of "Apocalypse Now" as well as, "Full Metal Jacket" and a few others along the way, it would seem that the poor soldiers were under some very inept commanders and many lost their lives because of this. From what I can gather, pretty much the whole war was a shambles, and I have that from some first hand information as a NZ friend of mine was a battery commander in the battle of Long Tan (a movie about it is called, "Danger Close"), and was a commander of part of the artillery unit which held off the Vietcong who were trying to overrun a unit of Aussie soldiers, and he and his unit were recognised because of their non-stop artillery shelling of enemy positions, the accuracy of it and the fact that they were operating under some very telling situations. It saddens me to think of the young lives that were lost through the complete and utter ineptitude and stupidity of their commanders, and also those up the chain. Not to mention of course the many tens of thousands of lives that were lost on the other side of the conflict, and also those poor buggers who were, and who continue to be, affected by Agent Orange. If you haven't seen "Danger Close" then it's worth a watch. Danger close was quite good. Yes, Vietnam makes me reflect and consider how America would handle itself in a "real conflict". As a nation with the largest armed forces in the world, it is quite stunning to think they have not won a war since WWII, and they could not have even done that without the huge sacrifices of the allies, that they barely have as allies anymore, due to the recent exercise in bridge burning. They are so dependent on their satellites, that one very effective cyber attack on them, or the electrical grid would render the armed forces relatively useless. One of my favorite recent war movies was Hyena Road. A smaller Canadian production. Very well done, with a great script, acting, direction and production. I will usually consider anything over a 5.0, if the story sounds interesting. It is a weighted scale for the most part. Very little is above an 8.0, which means utterly remarkable on many levels. However, I hear the flashbacks are terrible, as little effort is made to render a 70 year old to be a 20 year old. And as we all know Lee is extremely spotty. Prior to Black Kkklansman, you have to go all the way back to 2008, for a decent film like Miracle at St. Anna. Most of his good work is behind him, much like Oliver Stone, Scorcese, Ridley Scott, and many others, who only have a certain number of good films within them. Eastwood is the exception to that. He keeps making great work! Edited June 16, 2020 by spidermike007
